NRL looking into alleged racial abuse of Ben Barba

An 18-year-old Dapto man has apologised to Brisbane Broncos star Ben Barba for racially abusing him on social media.

The NRL said in a statement the Country Rugby League (CRL) player spoke to Barba on the phone on Tuesday afternoon and expressed remorse for the abuse on Instagram.

"I appreciate that people can make mistakes and I accept the apology offered," Barba said.

"I was once a teenager and made mistakes. I believe as long as this young man receives some education on racial abuse and the effects it has, he can learn from the incident.

"I certainly don't want him lost from our game."

The NRL and CRL said the player will not be allowed to take part in any rugby league activities until he undergoes a cultural awareness program and convinces the ARL Indigenous Council and Indigenous Elders of his remorse.

I believe as long as this young man receives some education on racial abuse and the effects it has, he can learn from the incident.
Ben Barba
The NRL Integrity Unit met with the man and his family and the actions to be taken come after consultation between the NRL, CRL, ARL Indigenous Council, the Broncos and the family.

NRL chief operating officer Jim Doyle said the action taken by the league was further evidence the NRL will not tolerate racism.

"We take these matters very seriously and will continue to act strongly on any form of racial abuse in our game," he said.

"Rugby league is an inclusive sport and vilification will not be tolerated.

"It is important we continue to educate everyone that this sort of behaviour is unacceptable, both in rugby league and in society in general."

ARL Indigenous Council chair Linda Burney said: "I am pleased to join the NRL in its condemnation and action taken on this issue.

"People need to understand how hurtful and unacceptable racial vilification is."

Racial abuse unfortunately regular for Barba

The league's intervention came as Barba's father Ken called on the governing body to crack down on racism, saying his son was spat on during games for the Bulldogs last year and is sick and tired of abuse.

The Canterbury fan sparked the Instagram row the night of Barba's Brisbane debut against the Bulldogs.

The NRL was eager to take a tough stance on the race issue.

"This is a serious matter. Racism will not be tolerated in any form," NRL chief operating officer Jim Doyle said.

"Rugby league is an inclusive game and there is no excuse for behaviour that vilifies any member of the game or the community.

"We are in the process of speaking with the individual involved and his family."

Speaking to News Corp, Ken Barba said he wanted the NRL to take the same strong stance on the issue as the AFL did last year when Sydney superstar Adam Goodes was racially vilified during a game by a teenage female supporter.

"The game needs to take a stand on this," he said.

"I'm very disappointed.

"(Ben) is constantly being degraded and I hope the NRL can find this person and do something about it because enough is enough."
see bumsniffers it happens in both codes, hypocrites :thumbleft:

Isn't it great that Ken Barba wants the same strong stand the ADL took - so much for NRL being the more accepting code!

Briefly, lets see what happened.

Kid makes a racial remark on Twitter.
Kid gets into trouble
Kid rings Barber and apologizes
Kid has to attend cultural awareness training and has to meet with aboriginal elders before he is allowed to play Rugby League.

What the kid did was wrong, he is being punished and hopefully will come out at the end being more aware.

Handled pretty good I think

So are you saying that some racism is acceptable? He post comments on Instagram didn't he - with the intention of hurting and humiliating Barba - so are you trying to water down the incident?

Mark zzz Adam's post is to illustrate that no code is immune from racism - which I think he has - what the RL did was good and the correct response - I notice that the was a racial vilification incident at the A-League game in Sydney on the weekend! This just makes his point even stronger - racism has no boundaries RL or AF just admit this and we can all applaud both codes making this behaviour unacceptable in society - but throwing stones at other codes is hopefully a thing of the past! Now where has KE gone!

You are defencing SpazzAdam.
Fair dinkum.
This is the bloke who continually posts about NRL clubs & Pokies, while ignoring the same problem in AFL clubs.

He also starts threads on RL player behaviour & how it is far worse than any other sport, yet ignores the same problem in his sport.

I was just highlighting that fact..

Every excuse under the sun was made for that fat racist collington slob...plenty on here as well as the media.
yet when it is a RL fan the "'holier than thou'' Fumbletards are out in force.
Every sport has the problem .
I just find it laughable that the braindead who started this thread ,never admits to the problems in his sport that he accuses RL of.

Let's not look past the fact that this has been handled well by all concerned. Particularly as Barba has had personal issues in the past and his reaction could have been different to what it was. But he was thoroughly professional about it and my hat is off for him.

Nobody has ever said that racism didn't happen in the NRL, or any walk of life. It's a sad part of life that there are people out there who believe that racial vilification is acceptable.

I can't think of anything else that could have been done in this instance that could have been done better. The problem was identified and a solution put in place. Hopefully the kid has/will learn that this is unacceptable and others who hear/read of it will also learn.

The difference we have here with the NRL as apposed to the AFL we don't have a NRL commentator coming out and adding to the hurt felt by the individual.

Yes I think we should applaud the actions taken by all in this incident. It seems to me to be being handled well, although I don't fully agree with Ken Barba. The AFL as far as I know came down very softly on those involved in racially vilifying Goodes. imo the ***** should be given a hefty fine relevant to his own income and banned from footy fields for 2+ years.

In regards to the NRL/AFL debate here. The difference is the AFL has had racism rearing its ugly head from the very top echelons of the organisation way down to a little school girl Collingwood supporter. And it appears more frequent, particularly amongst those employed in high positions of the organisation.

Sure the NRL has the Andrew Johns saga which was shocking to see. But we got to remember, Johns stood down from his position as NSW Coach. He was probably forced to stand down like LG definitely was when he handed in his mod badge but that's another story. Fact is Johns had to take a significant fall from grace. Eddie? What'd he get? A tiny fine and a few hours mediation... [-X This is a clear cut example of institutional racism folks. And its in the AFL.

Anyone who wants to participate in an informed discussion specifically on institutional racism in the AFL can visit my thread on the AFL page.
