For years we've heard RL types gloating about how RL dominated Foxtel with most of the top rating programmes but now they've been relegated to third place! :(/

membership figures are bullshit, they can be fudged and inflated (all AFL clubs admit to doing this, and i do mean ALL, including your collington team)
revenue is what counts, and thats why Penrith Panthers sit at the top.

Are you serious? Collingwood revenue
The Collingwood Football Club has announced a net operating profit of $5.225 million and a net profit of $16.375 million for the financial year ending October 31, 2013, a sum which included development funding of $11.150 million.

Collingwood raised its year-on-year revenue by $2.6 million and lifted overall turnover above $75 million ($75,238,531), a result built largely on the back of record membership of over 80,000 (80,456) – a new club and AFL record. - See more at: http://m.collingwoodfc.com.au/news/2013 ... ZWutP.dpuf
http://m.collingwoodfc.com.au/news/2013 ... ial-result

As Penrith have not released their financial report for 2013 we can't say as yet what the exact position is but with debts of 40 mil and requiring 3+ mil at least from their leagues club they are no where near Collingwood - There is no surprise that this Brand value was done from a Sydney company. 214 your just being stupid!

Here swans....
Below is a cut out from an article reporting on the best sports brands in Australia.

“In the last 10 years the AFL has run away [from the NRL] in terms of ability to generate revenue, viewing figures and memberships,” Haigh says.

“Right now the NRL is struggling comparatively.”

Despite the AFL dominance, the most valuable brand in the country comes from the NRL.

Haigh says he was surprised when the Penrith Panthers emerged as the most valuable brand; it came out on top because of the methodology used by Brand Finance in compiling its list.

The Panthers are owned by the big Panthers Leagues Club, which turned over more than any other football-associated entity last year; it had revenue of $145.3 million and $84.8 million of this was from its poker machines.

Haigh suggests that Brand Finance considers revenue from poker machines to have less importance to brand value calculations than revenue from other sources, such as team shirts or branded caps. But the sheer weight of money flowing through the Panthers Group pushes it to the top of the list.

Second is the Collingwood Football Club, which is the biggest AFL club in the country in terms of revenue. It’s newly published financial results for the 2013 season show that Collingwood pulled-in $74.3 million this year.

Of this $22.2 million came from gaming and its social club while almost as much ($19.7 million) came from branded merchandise sales.

This compares to just $1.2 million in merchandise sales from the Panthers last year.

Despite ranking it second in terms of brand value, Brand Finance gives Collingwood a AAA brand rating. Collingwood is the only club in the top 20 to get a rating this high.

No A-League or Super Rugby club make the top 20, which gives an indication about how much more work they have to do to build their businesses. The other NRL clubs to make the list are the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs ($34.5 million), Parramatta Eels ($21.3 million), Brisbane Broncos ($18.6 million), Canberra Raiders ($16.0 million) and Sydney Roosters ($14.5 million).

Check out at the bottom of the article. There is a list of the top sports brands in australia.

Here's the difference, the panthers group are a separate business entity to the panthers sporting club. The $145 they make isnt available to the panthers football club as available funds, so the panthers get by on a modest budget. ALL of Collingwoods 75mil is theirs to do as they wish, train where they want, employ who they want etc..

THE days of the "superclub" are over - with the Panthers Group preparing to sell off some of its clubs to rid itself of $80 million debt and return to its core business of football.

Falling drink and food revenues, poker machine tax, smoking bans and the cost of servicing its debts have been blamed for the perilous financial position of the Panthers Group, also known as Penrith Rugby League Club Ltd.

Under a plan aimed at reducing the debt burden, the board laid the groundwork at its AGM on Thursday to sell off some assets by declaring 12 clubs in the group as "not core property".

The strategy is being driven by the group's chief executive officer, Warren Wilson, who told The Sunday Telegraph he wanted to refocus management back on rugby league and the football community.

The plan involves keeping the Panthers club at Penrith while reviewing the other 12.

Mr Wilson, formally appointed to the top job earlier this month, said the past practice of amalgamating clubs across the state was over and no longer financially viable. The board would consider each of the clubs to determine which ones would be de-amalgamated, he said.

"Limits on amalgamations, the pokies tax, changes to outdoor smoking, the GFC, rising interest rates -- the business conditions have been challenging and, quite simply, the board wants to go back to basics," Mr Wilson said.

"The reason the Penrith Rugby League Club exists is because of rugby league. That's what it was set up for and that's what we are going back to. A few years ago the centre of the wheel was to become this big business but somewhere we lost touch with the community and created a divide between the club and the football club."

Mr Wilson said he would be working with the Penrith Rugby League Football Club as part of the new strategy. The Panthers annual report posted last week said the key reason behind the proposed sale of assets was a $63 million loan that Panthers has to repay by June next year. The loan was part of a deal Panthers had entered with ING in 2007.

A new deal with the Torchlight Group gave Panthers an 18-month extension.

The Panthers Group has also posted losses of $61 million over the past eight years, including $9.5 million last year.

The report said the forecast profitability over the next few years was not enough for all of its debt to be retired.

"The board has concluded whilst the business is asset rich, (it) cannot generate sufficient free cash required to operate the group at its optimum."

well things like that are expected when you own and control over a dozen clubs, hotels, amusement park etc etc. All this still doesnt stop the fact the Penrith Panthers are the No1 sports brand in Australia.

yeh Panthers Group is a sparate business entity cos it needs to be, you cant have it combined. Penrith leagues club diversefied and set up the panthers group to increase revenue, they are still linked but then at the same time due to how the NRL works they dont nessesarily need to be one sole entity.

due to salary cap, third party payment laws etc alot of the money comes from the NRL and it is illegal and/or stupid for panthers group to throw mounds of cash into player contracts, or basically anything other than upgrades of facilities. any extra money the club needs all they need to do is ask and the money is there, they will never go broke or bankrupt or any financial difficulties like the lions etc are in.

The penrith panthers do train where they want, they own their own stadium, and their facilities are regularily upgraded, and if the club needed say $50 million for stadium upgrade guess who pays? Panthers Group. the worst thing going is the location of panthers stadium. if it and its leagues club were closer to a train station is would be perfect.

Panthers Group. the worst thing going is the location of panthers stadium. if it and its leagues club were closer to a train station is would be perfect.
collingwood train in a multimillion dollar complex right next to the MCG and rod laver arena. They have more money and fans than they know what to do with. Comparing them to the panthers is illogical

What that graph fails to tell you is that The AFL total comes from 3 1/2 Live FTA games, aswell as 9 pay TV matches. Compared with the NRL 1 live match per round, and just 5 Pay Tv matches. There is also no mention of the fact that the NRL had 4 of the top 5 matches.

well things like that are expected when you own and control over a dozen clubs, hotels, amusement park etc etc. All this still doesnt stop the fact the Penrith Panthers are the No1 sports brand in Australia.

Here's the difference, the panthers group are a separate business entity to the panthers sporting club. The $145 they make isnt available to the panthers football club as available funds, so the panthers get by on a modest budget. ALL of Collingwoods 75mil is theirs to do as they wish, train where they want, employ who they want etc..
yeh Panthers Group is a sparate business entity cos it needs to be, you cant have it combined. Penrith leagues club diversefied and set up the panthers group to increase revenue, they are still linked but then at the same time due to how the NRL works they dont nessesarily need to be one sole entity.

The Penrith Panthers NRL club owns the most valuable brand in Australian sports, according to new research.

Despite their value in dollar terms, however, the Panthers are not the strongest brand in perception terms, with that title going to AFL club Collingwood.

Brand valuation consultancy Brand Finance has ranked the top Australian sports teams by value and "brand rating" and concluded that the Panthers, at $46.2 million, are the most valuable.

Brand Finance Australia director Richard Haigh said the high dollar value of the Panthers came from their successful use of the Panthers name across its profitable leagues club and events facilities.

Brand ratings were driven by the strength of recognition and dedication to the brand **** the public.

"A stronger brand will probably mean more fans, more game day revenue, more merchandise revenue and higher TV rights," Mr Haigh said.

1. Gold - Penrith (NRL): Value: $46.2m Rating: AA-

2. Silver - Collingwood (AFL): $39.1m AAA

3. Bronze - Canterbury-Bankstown (NRL): $34.5m AA
