The Next AFL TV Deal - Predictions page...

Post by 214Four »

As the "The NRL TV Deal - Predictions page" has popped it head back up again on the main page I thought Id start up this thread so people can give their opinions on the next TV deal for the AFL.

Will the AFL manage a significant increase in its next Broadcast deal from the current one or will the issues that plague the game currently stall or even weaken the next AFL deal.

I think that the AFL will not see a massive increase in total Broadcast rights from the current one due to afew factors.

1. 3 of the 4 NSW & QLD clubs are struggling on the field, GWS and GC Suns are hemeraging AFL money, the Brisbane Lions are virtually bankrupt and are in the same boat as the other two. All 4 NSW/QLD teams have weak to very poor TV audience, and since the inception of GWS and the Suns things have not improved. Why would channel 7 or 10 want to pay top dollar for something that regularly gets beaten by re-runs on the other channels. NSW and QLD hold 57% of australian population, they have the biggest, the 3rd biggest and the 4th biggest TV markets.

If AFL is going shit in NSW and QLD its score card overall (across all of australia) at best can read 50%, and how well do you AFL fans think negoiations will go if tv audiences in NSW and QLD stay the same or lol drop even more... Vlad convinced channel 7, 10 and co that AFL was on the UP in the northern states, but no body believes the 'participation' figures anymore and now that theres actual AFL clubs in these (according to AFL) growth areas, the tv channels will be able to use the expansion clubs poor tv viewer figures and in the next deal instead of relying on 'facts' and 'figures' given to them by VLAD and CO.

do you think channel 7 and 10 will be fooled/bullshitted to again with misleading facts from the AFL and its media affiates during the next negoiation? No way, next time thanks to GWS and the Suns the TV channels will be able to combine their shit viewer figures with the swans and Lions and come to the realisation that AFL in QLD and NSW is small and basically has a niche folowing, and therefore the AFL cannot expect top dollar when in over 50% of australia AFL is a backwater game...

2. other than TAS or NT, there are no other places the AFL can expand in the near future, they could put another SA team or WA team in the AFL but all those areas will not give the AFL a potential increase in TV $$ because all those areas are either too small(NT and TAS) or the TV audience in those areas already have AFL. the only areas that would truely benefit the AFL would be regional NSW. this area of australia has almost 3 million people which AFL currently has no club coverage, and the chance of a team in regional NSW is 1-1000 lol. regional QLD is another area (although not as significant as regional NSW)

and i havent even mentioned any issues the AFL have that are VIC, SA or WA based....

what are other peoples thoughts on the AFL and its next TV deal.. Up or down down

It does you no credit to make claims that are highly questionable. Where does it say that the Suns and the Giants are leaking AFL money? Where does it say that the Lions are almost bankrupt? It's highly presumptive. I would also like to see where it says that un-named re-runs are outrating the AFL in New South Wales and Queensland.

I do agree though that the AFL's expansion options are almost exhausted, and Tasmania will not bring in much more money.

As I have forgotten when the next deal is due to be decided upon I'll hold on a prediction.

You've been hit with the resident idiot with severe mental health issues, Cracker. He needs his meds again obviously.

But how dare you claim we can't expand any further? 69 countries play our game! That's MASSIVE expansion and plenty of room to go further!

THE AFL is providing $34 million of bank guarantees on behalf of its clubs, in some cases to enable cash-stricken operations to pay their bills and convince auditors they remain commercially viable.

As Australia’s richest football competition prepares to enter fresh negotiations on what it hopes will be another $1 billion broadcast rights deal, its underclass of working-poor clubs are increasingly reliant on the goodwill of the AFL and banks to survive.

An examination of club finances by The Australian has found the AFL club in the most dire financial position is Brisbane, which remains technically insolvent with a deficiency in net assets of $4.7m and a deficiency in current assets of $12.8m.

The club is bleeding cash, with last year’s cash profit of nearly $400,000 a quirk of accounting masking a true loss of $538,872. The club’s 2013 season balance sheet prompted a stern warning from KPMG auditor Scott Guse, who said there was a “material uncertainty which may cast doubt about the company’s ability to continue as a going concern”.

To secure an $8 million bill facility, the club relied on an AFL guarantee and presented Westpac with a separate letter of support from the league setting out “a range of financial assistance packages that can be used to assist the company to meet its obligations if necessary”. St Kilda relied on an AFL guarantee to extend its commercial bill facility from $4.75m to $6.75 million. The Western Bulldogs, North Melbourne and Melbourne, who all failed to make last year’s finals series, also depend on AFL-guaranteed credit.

Carlton and Richmond continue to operate with AFL-backed credit facilities, although both clubs are steadily reducing the amount they owe and ended the last trading year with healthy cash surpluses.

The Lions earn more than the vast majority of NRL clubs. What they need to control is their spending. This inequality is a high priority on the AFLs list. The Lions wont have a single issue going forward

Don't know why they go out of their way to tell us AFL is dead and it's all smooth sailing for the NRL - IMO there was more AFL clubs make profits this year than NRL clubs, it's almost like they are trying to convince themselves. I don't care AFL here to stay! 450 million reasons to be happy! (and that was in 2012)

The Lions earn more than the vast majority of NRL clubs.
& also spend a lot more then them too
in fact
they spend a lot more then they earn
hence they're being near folding dickhead

they cannot curb spending because they would be cellar dwellars & in an RL stronghold like Brisbane
& they'd lose revenue from lack of support
they can't win either way so............
they're fucked

They cant curb spending because theyre in RL stronghold.......what the hell are you talking about? That may affect their revenue, but hardly their spending! :(/

They, like other struggling AFL clubs, will benefit from equalisation, which will come in the next few years
