Hawthorn captain Luke Hodge and North Melbourne full-back Scott Thompson have praised Hawthorn supporters for dobbing in a man who racially abused the Sudanese-born Majak Daw in Friday night's NAB Challenge clash in Launceston.

A Hawthorn supporter, who had a young child about five years old with him, was escorted from the ground by police after complaints from fellow supporters during the third quarter at Aurora Stadium.

''We are extremely disappointed it was a Hawthorn supporter, but also proud other Hawthorn people picked it up and didn't stand for it,'' Hodge said in Launceston.

''As far as we stand as a football club we don't want anyone a part of our football club who thinks like that, or [who] goes and says anything stupid like that at games or walking down the street or anywhere else.''

''It was very disappointing from a club point of view and an AFL point of view, but 'Maj' has a strong character and he is going well today,'' Thompson said at a clinic in Hobart on Saturday.

''It was good that supporters stuck up for him and dobbed that person in. Now, it's obviously a matter for Hawthorn and the police to figure out who it was and deal with that.

''He [Daw] has, obviously, been through worse over his life so far. He is coping fine. On the bus today, he was happy.''

The Hawks continued to investigate on Saturday whether the evicted supporter was a club member. But it appeared security and ground management may not have recorded the man's name, meaning it would be unlikely they could trace him.

''We may not be able to find him,'' Inveresk Precinct manager Robert Groenewegen said on Saturday.

''We know where he was sitting, but we don't know whether that was his personal seat, or someone bought it for him, or whether he purchased it at the gate, which means there will be no details of him.''

Groenewegen said efforts to identify the man would begin on Monday with the help of Ticketmaster. Any punishment, such as a potential ban from the stadium, would be handed down after consultation with the AFL.

Hawthorn has said that if the man is a member of the club, he will have his membership cancelled, just as Collingwood did to one of its members who racially abused Gold Coast midfielder Joel Wilkinson in 2012.

An SMS service to report anti-social behaviour was put in place at Aurora Stadium in 2011 after former Hawthorn forward Lance Franklin was racially abused, and that was used on Friday night.

Thompson welcomed Hawthorn's declaration to revoke the man's membership if he was found to be a club member.

''Definitely. That can't be tolerated at footy games and can't be tolerated anywhere in Australia, or anywhere,'' he said.

Sydney champion and Australian of the Year, Adam Goodes, who was a victim of racial abuse himself last season, tweeted: ''I have much admiration for those @HawthornFC supporters saying racism @ItStopsWithMe so courageous. Big HUGS for @majakdaw and his family''. It was retweeted by Daw.

Hawthorn's Cyril Rioli also tweeted his disappointment at the incident.

I do recall another incident against this same player a while ago, then there's the Goodes & Eddie incidents last year.

All you can do is throw back to something that long ago.
