Former Blacktown mayor Alan Pendleton claims the GWS Giants have betrayed Blacktown and rubbished their allegiance to western Sydney by relocating to Homebush.
When the Giants formed in 2009, they were welcomed with $27.5 million worth of purpose-built training and administration facilities at Blacktown International Sportspark.
The project was funded by Blacktown Council under then-mayor Pendleton, in partnership with the AFL and Cricket NSW, with the understanding that Blacktown would become the club’s long-term home.
However on Tuesday the club unveiled their new $11.5 million facility in Sydney Olympic Park, known as the Learning Life Centre.
Councillor Pendleton, who remains on Blacktown Council, attacked the decision to relocate the club 25km to the east.
“When they came to Blacktown they were going to be located here for the long-term, then they decided they got a better offer,” he said.
“It’s my belief that they betrayed Blacktown ... I don’t believe they have kept their end of the bargain.
“I don’t believe Homebush is western Sydney and the real western Sydney community isn’t going to buy it”
At the opening of the Learning Life Centre, Giants chairman Tony Shepherd paid specific tribute to Blacktown Council and the Blacktown region.
“We will be forever indebted to Blacktown and it will always be a part of the Giants, and the Giants a part of Blacktown,” he said.
Yet Cr Pendleton said the impact the Giants have had on the sporting landscape in Blacktown is negligible, reinforced by the fact that not one member of the team lives in the Blacktown region.
In 2009 the club’s foundation players were all settled in Breakfast Point, a picturesque suburb on the Parramatta River, only 14km from the CBD.
“I think they have some very small presence here (in Blacktown) but it’s no more than that,” Cr Pendleton said.
“You might get a clinic or two, or a few players walk through Westpoint, but that’s not what we signed up for.
“I was a foundation member but it’s fair to say I won’t be renewing my membership this year.”
