MELBOURNE Storm star Cooper Cronk hopes regional Victoria will produce some of the NRL’s next biggest names.



The popularity of rugby league – a sport with its heartlands in New South Wales and Queensland – is on the rise in Mildura, with more youngsters taking to the game than ever before.

Last year, Mahe Fonua became the first Victorian product to make his first- grade debut, and reigning Dally M Medallist Cronk believes there could be

more Victorian-bred players on the NRL pitch in the near future.

“There are three more (players) who are in a position to play that I know of,” he said.

“Let’s hope it spreads wider to regional areas such as Mildura.

“I’ve been coming out to the regional areas for 10 years and Mildura has definitely got a taste for rugby league.

“I’ve known that it’s a really big sporting location here. They love their sport in Mildura, love their rugby league, and development officers out here are doing a fantastic job.”
Nice story..as a RL fan good to see kids getting involved.
& this counteracts claims by the simpletons on here that there is no development in NON heartland areas.

Now if I was to look at this article from the perspective of an AFL fan reading the same thing about AFL in non heartland areas.
I would be saying..

IT is taking over AFL I dead ,its only a matter of time..

A little historical note. This competition ran from 1991 to 1995 and reformed in 2011. Currently has just six clubs. Has to use a makeshift venue out at Nichols Point for most of their games and only have two others, a school (Chaffey College) and Robinvale. So from nothing yeah I guess it could be on the rise.

But it won't last. Footy is strong with two competitions in the area (the Sunraysia FL and the Millewa FL) and thugby's Titans, Tigers and Warriors are no match in following to the Bulldogs, Cats and Imperials - not to mention Irymple, Merbein and Red Cliffs! And Wentworth, Robinvale, Cardross, Bambill, Euston, Gol Gol, Werrimull, Nangiloc and Meringur!

I think you will all find that all Victorian cities on the border have strong leanings for rugby league. I am rather surprised at the statistics provided by TLPG, although the Mildura area is remote and so it perhaps doesn't count like it does elsewhere. Places like Echuca, Cobram, Yarrawonga and Wodonga enjoy rugby league as much as they do AFL. That's why the AFL expanded into the Riverina area from an early stage, given that it is closer to Melbourne than it is to Sydney.
