Healthy outlook for sport as juniors sign up in droves

Anthony Gough •
The Sunday Mail (Qld) •

Junior sports sign-on 2013

WHILE the world of professional sport lies under a murky cloud, Queensland's pint-sized stars are set to shine, with clubs looking forward to their biggest seasons on record.

A few weeks after registrations for winter sports such as netball, soccer, league and union officially kicked off, major codes are reporting bumper numbers, with tens of thousands of kids flocking to sign-ups.

While fees have increased in some clubs, others have actually seen the cost to parents fall, bringing welcome relief to families.

Football Queensland chief operating officer Ben Mannion said the code was "very happy" with their soccer sign up figures, returning more than 35,000.

"Last year we had 70,000 players register and we're well and truly over half of that in the first couple of weeks," he said.

Mr Mannion said clubs were hoping for their most successful year yet, with World Cup qualifiers and the lead-up to the 2015 Asian Cup expected to fuel a surge of interest in the game.

Costs remain high for parents of kids who want to bend it like Beckham, with fees around $300 or more for registration in some inner-city clubs.

Mr Mannion said while the cost may increase, club fees to Football Australia hadn't risen, and clubs were working to reduce overheads.

Netball Queensland membership services unit manager Ashley Hustwayte said the code was aiming for a record year, outstripping last year's 47,256 registrations.

Mr Hustwayte said the sport had already seen a "big jump" on the Gold Coast, where one association had reported team numbers surging from 107 in 2012 to 140 so far this year, with sign-ups only a few weeks in.

He said although insurance costs had risen, club fees to Netball Queensland remained the same, and a season should cost $150-$250 for registration.

AFL Queensland community competitions manager Cherie Brockwell said the Brisbane Juniors had surpassed online player registrations for the same period last year, with 7000 participants expected to sign up. :(/ :(/ :(/ :(/ :(/ :(/ :(/

The rugby codes are also looking for growth.

Brisbane Junior Rugby Union competition manager Kim Schuck said it was too early to confirm numbers, but the code was expecting to surpass last year's 8500 registrations in the area.

"It's looking like a really good year and we're looking at our numbers growing again," she said.

She said "very, very few" clubs had raised their fees this year, with most staying the same or even dropping because of better sponsorship deals within the code.

A Queensland Rugby League spokesman said the code was gearing up to beat last year's 46,338 registered players.

Only a deluded fuckwit would claim that AFL is bigger .
As shown by the junior numbers it is 5th behind RL ,RU,SOCCER & NETBALL.

& no actua numbers ..the fumble guy used Participants.

This moron thinks there are more fumbleclubs in SEQ than RL clubs.
No one can be this stupid..
& I am serious..

When I have time I will list the clubs & they will dwarf the fumble clubs.
But in cwappers warped little world if Master says its so then its gospel,no matter how many times he has been shown to have no fucking idea or be straight out lying

I think the suns are going great as to its purpose to grow the game here. I can see your point if it were gws you were talking about... Lots if struggles there. If you are just talking on field performance I think that's a bit short cited. A case in point, if the giants were performing well on the field I would still say that they aren't doing so well due to off field woes. Suns are improving on field and will continue to do so. But it is their acceptance off field and the general acceptance as the towns sporting side along with titans (without all the woes that the titans have been through), I would say the suns are doing better then the lions in that area. Although lions have a strong core of supporters. Suns do too but not as large. Suns are big in media up here and lots of local natives follow them. Smart move was the growing of club from scratch ... As town has grown with them ... A bit like the gc itself, it has been the little guy and grown and now challenging to get up there... There is a parallel process I would say. Fortunate north didn't move as think the cgi wouldn't have got behind that team as much. Yes indeed, the suns are going well up here ... Once they get it together on the field, and they will, they will be massive ... The question. Will it be sustained ?
Phelpsy you mentioned how GCS purpose is to grow the game in SE QLD, but is that area really big enough for two AFL teams? specially two successful AFL teams.

brisbane and the gold coast are very close to each other (the two urban areas are connnected and CBD-CBD is 70km) and the lions have only been somewhat successful due to the merged populations of 2.6million. AFL is 3rd popular at best in this area so if we took the population figure and collolated it with the sporting teams/codes populaity then the dominant rugby codes i would say have 70% of market in brisbane and (according to phelpsy) 50% market of goldcoast which gives a population of 1.7 million. soccer is more dominant than AFL in brisbane so id say 10% of brisbane is AFL and on the gold coast id say 40% AFL to give a population figure for AFL in brisbane/Gold coast of 400,000 - 500,000(ill use the 500K figure). So pre 2011 there was one AFL team (the lions) based in brisbane/gold coast which has an AFL market population of 500,000, which is satisfactory for one team. then 2011 GCS enter the competition so that 500,000 figure is now at best shared 50/50 which would give 250K each, which i think would be really pushing the line between successful(staying in the black and making money) and folding. Geelong works ok with this number mainly due to its location so close to the biggest AFL market.

If you disagre with me on GCS suns being detrimental ill put it in another perspective for you. Do you seriously think GCS would exist if the gold coast happened to be as far from brisbane as say newcastle is from sydney (CBD - CBD 160kms)? Is the market on the gold coast alone large enough to support an AFL team. I say no. GCS need brisbane metro just like the lions need the gold coast metro. the areas population is too small (market wise) for both AFL teams to be successful (staying in the black and not relying on AFL money to survive). sadly, the market is big enough for one team to potentially be a success(looks to be GCS) whilst the other will be a basket case(relying on AFL handouts to survive).

Interesting points with a few assumptions (10 percent Brisbane ?) but your general question is a good one. Can the suns survive on Gold Coast alone. My view is a clear yes. Would the lions benefit if there were no suns ... In the short term the answer is yes as I know a few suns supporters who have transferred allegiances to the suns, some who haven't and remain lions supporters. Gold Coast is already thriving on the Gold Coast and the growth over the past three years of the suns and the general change of attitude toward them had been amazing. I think the lions will benefit long term from the suns however with the growth of AFL in seq continuing. You see AFL played in a lot of schools in the southern suburbs .. I visit ones in that area such. Kids play union or league as well but also AFL. Nrl is clearly dominant in Brisbane area with AFL more popular on hold coast .. I would say maybe 35 percent though but growing. So as AFL is supported or followed by more people, and AFL is in the media more and more due to there being a game every week in the state and on tv every week on fta, this sees its profile grow. The AFL at junior levels is much better run too and a lot of professional types bring their kids over .

Healthy outlook for sport as juniors sign up in droves
