In England.

1948 - First televised RL match, Wigan versus Bradford cup final, broadcast to the Midlands.

In Australia

http://www.nrl.com/nrlhq/referencecentr ... fault.aspx

Radio 1924: First radio broadcast of Rugby League.

1961: Rugby League's first televised game, (Balmain v Norths). First Rugby League Sevens tournament played.

1967: Live telecast on all four channels of Souths v Canterbury Grand Final.
First radio coverage of the VFL - trying to find a source but I'm pretty sure it was the same year so we're down to dates on that one.

First televised game - I know I saw a replay of the 1960 VFL preliminary final between Collingwood and Fitzroy, and there was some before that as well.

First live GF - 1967 as well. The VFA Grand Final between Dandenong and Port Melbourne and part of the season was also beamed out live!

On all 4 channels?

Still, doesn't beat the poms from 1948 does it :>::

:P
It doesn't matter because Australia didn't even have TV in 1948, and AFL wasn't being played in England then anyway.

All four channels? I call BS on that.

The AFL and vfl do not and have not ever had a sinbin or send off rule, it's your bloody sport and you don't even know that, I do, and I can't stand the sport.

Just shows how ignorant you viccykickky idiots are.
Bullshit. They've had it in the rules for years - decades even! Just because we don't have it at the top level doesn't mean it doesn't exist at all in the game of AFL!!

Rule 9.4

Read it and weep!
Could I have the name of the first person to be sent off in a vfl or AFL game please?

Oh, and one more thing, the send off rule is not the sin bin dopey, send off means you can not come back onto the pitch at any time.

In Rugby League, the sin bin means after 5 or 10 mins, (the ref used to be able to put ppl in the bin for either 5 or 10 minutes, these days it's 10 minutes) you are free to rejoin the game, so no, you are wrong, very very wrong.

You don't understand as usual the difference between sent off and sin bin :_<>
In AFL it IS the same thing. If RL claims that it's not then it's stupid.

I don't have access to the junior records of send offs when the rule was first introduced.

The 1967 New South Wales Rugby Football League premiership was the sixtieth season of Sydney's professional rugby league football competition, Australia's first.

In 1967 the Nine Network reached agreement with the NSWRFL for a fee of $5,000 for TV broadcasting rights for the grand final.

The send off rule had been around in Australia. Rules footy for as long as I remember ... Both a sin bin type (time limited) and send off ... Whole game. Never been at top level though but I thought the Vfa had it and not sure whether the vfl continue to have it.

On another note, this is not about firsts ... It's about what each of the AFL and nrl do well. AFL started soo but rl do it far better in this country.... Just as an example.

Thanks to NRLC for holding the fort on this one. Now let's compile what we have, and NRLC you did make some mistakes;

1. When was the first thugby league game on ANZAC Day?
Parra: 1927 between Glebe and Western Suburbs.

2. When did this local Derby reference to Wigan and St Helens first appear?
Parra: No date given.
*The younger of the two clubs (St Helens) was formed in 1873 but no date could be found for their first meeting. The first local Derby in football was in 1877 upon the first meeting of Fitzroy and Carlton.

3. When did thugby league first play on Friday night? (The others I acknowledge as probably right, and not neccessarily a good thing)
Parra: 1974. Note though that other weeknights are claimed at the same time.
*Monday night was first played in the VFL in 1952 in Brisbane (Essendon v Geelong - actually postponed from Saturday because of the weather). I forgot about this one when acknowledging the others as maybe right. In 1956 the eight teams that didn't make the VFL finals played a knockout competition at the old Lake Oval with games on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays (as well as a Monday night final). In the 1957 series (this series went until 1971) a game was played on the Friday night.

4. When did thugby league first play on a Sunday?
Parra: 1967.
*Football beats that easily, and not just with the VFA as NRLC mentioned. There were no less than three Sunday competitions being played in metro Melbourne by the late 1950's. I don't have a formation date for two of them but it would have been just after the end of WW2 but no later than 1950. Those competitions faded out as the VFA told hold of Sunday arvos.

5. When did thugby league became semi pro and then fully pro?
Parra: Semi Pro 1895 Fully Pro 1921
*NRLC did his homework on this one although he only got one year right for football. It was indeed 1897 for semi pro as the VFL was formed to break away from the then fully amateur VFA in not dissimilar circumstances to Parra's example. But it was 1911 and not 1912 when the VFL became fully pro and paid all of it's players (abolishing it's amateur status entirely as NRLC rightly quoted). The bribery scandal of 1910 indeed played a role in that as well. But two clubs couldn't do it because their club constitution prohibited it - Melbourne and University. But that was only two out of the ten so it still counts as fully pro.

6. When did the first indigenous Australian play elite level thugby league and who was it?
Parra: 1936, Fred Fisher. But Parra limited his search to the first indigenous Aussie to go overseas (see below) when that wasn't the question.
*NRLC got this one wrong. Whilst Sir Douglas did play (and I did have the honour of actually meeting the man much later in life in 1974 at a church service the same night I met my childhood hero Peter McKenna) the first player was actually Joe Johnson for Fitzroy in 1904. Note that there wasn't any thugby league in Australia until four years LATER!! So I knew that I had Parra on this one.

7. Who was the first first indigenous player to captain his elite level team? (I'll leave the rep one alone for obvious reasons)
Parra: Arthur Beetson. It was in 1974 for Eastern Suburbs upon checking. Have to admit when I asked the question I completely forgot about him.

8. When did thugby league "get permission" to allow an indigenous player to travel overseas?
Parra: I assume 1936 (see question 6 above)

9. What was the first thugby league game televised live, and what was the first grand final televised live?
Parra: 1967 for both
*Football wins and it's further back than 1960 as NRLC speculated and even that wasn't live. In 1957 the final quarter of VFL games was being televised LIVE. This part I knew I had Parra on. However I admit I didn't know about the 1967 NSWRL GF live coverage as I knew like NRLC did about the 1967 VFA GF on Channel 0. Indeed the thugby league GF won the battle by 8 days.

10. When did thugby league introduce the sin bin?
Parra: 1981
*Footy beats that. When I started umpiring in 1983 the junior league I joined had already had it since 1978. It was a sin bin as defined by Parra because if you were sent off it was for the rest of the game. Of interest, Parra claimed that he was only talking about elite level. If so please update us with when the SPORT introduced it, not the NSWRL introduced it. For the record, the VFA had the order off but it was introduced later than 1981.

So all up Parra only won on three and a half points with one to be confirmed (#2). Less than 50 percent.

Wow! There are some things there that I didn't know about! Last quarters live in 1957? Awesome! A night game in Brisbane in 1952? Sunday footy in the 40's? I figured there would be someone before Douglas Nicholls, but I didn't know who. I only used him because he beat ParraEel's example. Thanks for a specific year on the AFL order off. I figured you might know given you're an umpire.
