Former Rugby league player Ryan Tandy is in the slammer charged with holding a person against their will on the Central Coast.

He was refused bail overnight and will appear at Gosford Local Court on Friday.

SACKED Gold Coast Suns footballer Campbell Brown is in trouble again, arrested while celebrating his big win at yesterday's Magic Millions races.

Brown, sacked in disgrace in August after shattering the jaw of teammate Steven May after a pre-season training camp in the US, was in a brighter mood yesterday when Sweet Idea, the horse he co-owns with real estate kings the Henderson brothers, won the prestigious Magic Millions Guineas for three-year-olds.

However, the night took a turn for the worse, with the former Suns hard man arrested after a scuffle with police at a Broadbeach nightclub.

Police say officers were walking through the nightclub when Brown and another man refused a police directive to move out of the way.

The men allegedly made contact with the officers.

They were taken to Surfers Paradise Police Station and charged with assault/obstruct police.

Both men were released from the Southport watchhouse early today and will face court in February.

Brown, who retired from AFL following the LA disgrace, is an avid horse racing fan, enjoying previous success with Sweet Idea as a two-year-old at last year's Magic Millions.

It is believed Brown will relocate to Melbourne.

not to condone violence, in any way, but after a year of a number of violent incidents, Newcastle nights player russell packer, gets what he deserves 2 years jail for hitting a bloke. prehaps this will send a message to many of the other NRL thugby heroes that like to hitting people. no other code in Australia has the violent culture like the NRL does with a large number of off field incidents occurring regularly to follow suit.

Eagles AFL player jailed over punch

West Coast footballer Murray Newman has been jailed for one year after being found guilty of fracturing a man's jaw at a Perth nightclub for sleeping with his girlfriend.

Newman was convicted by a jury last year in the Perth District Court of causing grievous bodily harm to Brett Marris, then aged 20, in November 2012.

Newman, then aged 18, had a "deep grudge" against Mr Marris because he had slept with Newman's girlfriend, Judge John Staude said on Friday.

After weeks of threats from Newman on Facebook, including telling Mr Marris to "start digging a grave", the pair saw each other at the Library Nightclub in Northbridge.

Newman was sober but "angry and agitated" when the pair fought briefly before bouncers broke up the fight, the court heard.

Judge Staude did not accept that Newman was acting in self-defence against a taller man.

"You struck Marris precisely because he would not rise to your challenge for a fight," Judge Staude said.

"You were the aggressor, not he."

Judge Staude was also critical of Newman for only showing remorse after the verdict.

He concluded that a prison sentence was the only appropriate action.

Newman must spend six months behind bars before being eligible for parole.

He also has a permanent restraining order against him and cannot be near Mr Marris.

Newman was supported in court during the trial by West Coast Eagles teammates including captain Darren Glass, Dean Cox, Nic Naitanui and Josh Kennedy.
