Here's a better answer, Phelpsy! I just did this research now - read it and weep rugby league geese!

27 leagues in New South Wales and I'll count the NRL to make it 28 (Wikipedia)
1 in the ACT (Wikipedia)
23 leagues in Queensland (Wikipedia)
As previously established there are 3 leagues in Victoria, 1 in SOuth Australia, 2 in Western Australia, 1 in Tasmania and I think it was 4 in the Northern Territory.

Total Open Age leagues for rugby league: 63

Now for AFL my source is TLPG's website
50 leagues in Victoria and I'm counting the AFL for that number
25 leagues in South Australia
(75 already!!)
26 leagues in Western Australia
12 leagues in Tasmania
12 leagues in New South Wales
1 league in the ACT
8 leagues in Queensland
6 leagues in the Northern Territory (TLPG's website says four but he doesn't have the two summer competitions listed)

Total Open Age leagues for AFL: 140

MORE THAN DOUBLE!!

(And I didn't even take into account any multiple divisions, which would have made the margin even greater!)

this butt plug & Wikipedia :(/ :(/ :(/

when will the dickcheese learn :(/ :(/   :_<> :_<> :_<> :_<>

there are in fact
the following leagues in NSW ... just to prove how incorrect Wikiderpia is :(/ :(/ :(/ :(/

23 Groups/Comps in the CRL ( NSW Country ) including the ACT ( group 8)who are under the control of the CRL at senior level.
http://crlnsw.com.au/

then the Metropolitan NSWRL ( Sydney )
there are 11 District leagues in Sydney
Penrith , Parramatta , Wests, Canterbury ,Balmain , Souths , Manly , Norths , St George , Cronulla & Easts
then there are the junior rep comps
Harold Matts & SG Ball ... U18's & U16's ( 18 sides in each including Perth & Melbourne  )
then the NSW cup
then the Ron Massey cup ..
the Sydney Shield ....
the Tertiary Cup .. or old University Shield

for a total of 17 leagues in Sydney under the control of the NSWRL
that's
40 in total ... in NSW alone
http://www.nswrl.com.au/

but Wikitardia has only 27? :?>

& as we've said anyway
this isn't about leagues & clubs

this is about participants

another Silver for the Victorian game
Partipants huh? In order to participate you have to have clubs. To have clubs compete you have to have leagues. So my argument is valid.

I want links to these district competitions.

Anyway, even if it's 40 and not 27 that still only makes 76 nationwide!! AFL still kills you at 140!! By the way - I wasn't counting junior leagues so take them off your count.
He has to be a RL Troll.
No one is this stupid.
There is AFL stupid...Swans,Adam,Cos
But this is so straight out wrong about everything that he must be winding people up.

I went to that link and got nothing. I just googled touch football and got that thing on the irb making rules for touch ?

The other link was to the nrl press release I thought.

The link posted didn't work. My point was touch is played all over the world and I hardly think they call it league in Europe or South Africa etc.

The other link posted was from an nrl press release that talks of the "two" sports signing mou that would be beneficial to both sports, but there is no comment on that? If the mou is beneficial to both sports how can they be the same sport?

Re: What is a VFL participant

The National Rugby League and Touch Football Australia have today launched an historic sporting partnership representing the biggest boost to participation and game development in the history of either sport.

NRL stars Sonny Bill Williams, Anthony Minichiello, Josh Morris, Matt King and Beau Champion joined Australian music sensation Jessica Mauboy and Australian Touch representatives Louise Winchester and Steve Roberts to celebrate the first game of the new era at Allianz Stadium.

The two sports will work together to create the largest sporting community in the country which will reflect the wider support that exists for Rugby League and the game’s commitment to ensuring there is a ‘place on the field’ for everyone.

The new agreement will bring more than 1.03 million participants together playing in competitions under a joint NRL-TFA banner. This is in addition to the 844,000 girls and boys who currently take part in NRL Development programs each year.

The partnership will represent the most significant national marketing and participation drive in Australian sport, create a year-round involvement with the Greatest Game of All and help Touch Football Australia raise its profile.

Long-term benefits include:

Greater recreation participation opportunities for all abilities and ages;
Lowering participation and insurance costs;
Co-ordinated pathways programs for elite athletes;
Opportunity for strategic funding of green-space and other sporting facilities;
More opportunities to work with government in the delivery of community and education programs.
Today’s signing of the Memorandum of Understanding commits each party to finalise the terms of the partnership which will include discussions with the Australian Sports Commission.

“The new agreement with Touch Football Australia is a key strategic step in growing opportunities for Rugby League,” NRL Chief Executive, Mr Dave Smith, said today.

“Not only will it see more than one million people play in unified competitions, it brings together people from every state and territory, from almost every age group and every demographic.

“We have been very clear about our ambition to extend the profile and reach of Rugby League and working with Touch Football Australia will also enable us to pursue new commercial and marketing opportunities that we can leverage with new partners.”

Chief Executive of Touch Football Australia, Mr Colm Maguire, said the benefits to Touch Football Australia were significant.

“There is a real opportunity to grow the profile of touch both as a recreational game and an elite sport,” Mr Maguire said.

“Touch Football in Australia was born out of Rugby League and the opportunity to create Australia’s largest sporting community aligned with the NRL is as compelling as it is ambitious and fortuitous.

“Significantly, the partnership enables Touch Football to realise its vision articulated in its strategic plan, to become Australia’s leading community sport through strategic partnerships.”

You will notice the reference to rl and touch being separate sports, to oartnerships, to benefits to both sports .... No where do they say they are the same sport. Just as league born from union , this does not make union and, league the same. Neither does it maje touch andleague the same. Can some one address my actual points rather than cherry pickibg points, deflecting, and verbslly abusing when I make a point you fobt want ti answer. I have provided a,press relesse from the nrl that talks about an arrangement between two sports .... That is mutually beneficial to both sports. Could you at least acknowledge that is what it days over and over in the press release.

totally different situations
far be it for someone who knows why trying to explain it to an ignorant halfwit

but here goes

RL was born through a need for change
RU was a sport run by oppressive tyrants hell bent on exploiting its players ... players simply wanted to be paid their wages for work so they could feed their families if they were injured playing RU
the heartless top end of town wealthy toff RU establishment running the game ... refused claiming that would make them professional ....
& if they didn't like it they could stop playing .... or laughing at them said
or invent your own game

These players said well fuck them
We WILL invent our own sport ... :-k

Touch Football was born out of a training drill for RL players
coaches wanted to simulate a game of RL at training without the tackling so as to avoid injury.
its our invention
its our game

Union is not at all the same as League & this was through design ... massive differences ... not alike at all
Touch & RL are essentially the same game .. hardly any difference ... very .... very alike
& this too
was also through design
