I actually came from a union background and having scarcely watched league thought union was far superior. How wrong I was haha Union's popularity is primarily because it was popular **** the rich and thus governments and the rich and governments obviously have the most power. The origins are not that important, what matters is the game and league is the most enthralling sport i've ever watched, I regularly watch NFL, NBA, used to watch soccer, still watch a bit of union and tried to get into AFL in a 1 or 2 month period which failed miserably.
