Look at the number of fans who watch SOO but can't be bothered going to NRL games or even watching on the TV in anywhere near the same numbers. This even includes your GF.

SOO is only popular at the level it is because it taps in to a traditional rivalry between two states and their most popular sport. Take the state rivalry away and you end up with your disappointing GF ratings.

Its SOO. 3 games per year that does almost as much negative damage to the NRL rounds it affects. We love it. Your game becomes one long excuse for weeks on end.
