The west is not yet close to being won for the Brisbane Lions. But their bold move into rugby league country represents a decent enough start for a football club that has experienced the most emotionally erratic of weeks.
It was on Tuesday night the club was trying to deal with the fallout of the sudden axing of coach Michael Voss, who stepped down immediately after being told he was not wanted next season.
Just two days later, still sans coach but with prospects apparently on the horizon, the Lions were gazing over their new kingdom in Springfield, a masterplanned community west of Brisbane that will be their new home from 2016.
There were politicians and ministers and spin doctors on hand as Brisbane chairman Angus Johnson revealed a $15 million federal contribution to his club's new training and administration base.
It's a significant pledge for a facility that Johnson believes will surpass any AFL club in the nation and be on par, or better, than football giant AC Milan or some of the leading NFL franchises.
The pledge from the Labor government was made before it went into caretaker mode and Regional Australia Minister Catherine King has urged a Coalition government to honour that pledge should it win office.
But there are no guarantees. Ballymore was slated for a $25 million slice of federal funds as part of an upgrade that would have turned it into a first-class centre of excellence. But that was slashed in 2008, leaving Queensland rugby administrators with a half million dollar bill.
The first phase will cost $60 million on land leased for 99 years and will feature an MCG-sized oval, lighting suitable for NAB Cup games and a gym, pool, medical facilities, education centre, admin facilities and player lounge.
The great irony is that Voss had longed cried out for new facilities as the ageing Gabba, which will still host home games, fell further and further behind the AFL benchmark.
The move to Springfield is a pivotal shift in focus for the Lions as they seek to tap into one of the fastest-expanding regions in Australia.

And while they source players from all over Australia through the draft, the area west of Brisbane through Ipswich and Logan has become one of the most hotly contested recruiting hotspots in the nation for a variety of football codes.
Johnson said he was aware that rugby league was the key code in the area but wasn't frightened of setting up shop right in the middle of the battleground.
"It is rugby league heartland. But there's room for everybody. We love the game of rugby league but we can all live out here together," Johnson said.
"We draw players from throughout Australia through the draft but we will have our Lions academy based here. Given the growth profile of this area, I've absolutely no doubt we'll be seeing people from here on our list and playing for the Brisbane Lions."
Johnson said the new base was the product of extensive research from around the AFL and the world, with the Lions football department searching far and wide for ideas.
"We've been designing our facility over the past 12-18 months. We've had a look at the facilities and it will be cutting edge. We're talking about a world-class facility," Johnson said.
"We've had football department staff in Europe and the US looking at facilities, including AC Milan and some of the leading NFL clubs.
"I'm not sure everybody will appreciate what a significant day this is. This is a significant day not only for the Brisbane Lions but for Australian Rules Football since we've been playing in Queensland, which is well over 100 years."
Springfield was preferred over the Queensland Sports and Athletics Centre, which hosted the 1982 Commonwealth Games and the Brisbane Broncos in the 1990s, despite lacking the same proximity to the city.

Lions set up shop in NRL country

Givernment ? :-k

And the NRL were trumped yet again!

"This is a wake-up call for rugby league"

TIME TO ACT: Steve Johnson has warned the NRL not to take league heartland for granted.

Sarah Harvey
THE Western Corridor NRL bid team was aiming to install its own base on the very Springfield block of land where the Brisbane Lions will build their $60 million elite training and administration facility.

Steve Johnson, the Western Corridor NRL bid boss, has warned that the Lions move is "a wake-up call for rugby league that you can't take the heartland for granted".

The Lions move into Springfield sees the AFL trump the NRL in one of Australia's fastest growing regions.

Johnson was involved for several years in negotiations to get the land, where the Lions will now be based, transferred from the Springfield Land Corporation (SLC) to Ipswich City Council with a view to basing the bid team there.

"We were looking to share it with the AFL down the track and coexist with them. But they don't look for coexistence. They look for domination," Johnson said.

Now the Lions will have a 99-year lease on the land for a peppercorn rent and will reap the rewards of the groundwork put in by the Western Corridor bid team.

"Our bid team sat down and went through the strategic plan of the state of Queensland and we carefully identified Springfield as being the centre of the golden triangle between Logan, Ipswich and Brisbane," Johnson said.

"We identified the same parcel of land the Lions are now using as being very strategic geographically and demographically. So it made sense for a training facility to be built there with some playing grounds. Our plan was to occupy it for 10 years, and once the growth occurred in the corridor and population dictated, look to the state and federal government to construct a purpose built stadium in Ripley Valley or Ipswich itself.

"We would then relocate our training and playing base and leave behind for the community of Springfield, that would be 105,000 to 120,000 people, a wonderful sporting facility. In 2009 when we started this we were the only NRL bid and the only likely team in the corridor.

"If we came into being the state of Queensland would pick up between $30 million and $40 million in rent revenue for us playing at Suncorp Stadium. We were asking them to spend $20 million on a training facility...that fitted in perfectly with their strategic plan."

The plan was given a tick by the previous state government and they intended to fund the Western Corridor NRL side's base. But due to NRL dithering over expansion, the AFL and Lions worked on their own plan and will now be entrenched in the western corridor.

The parcel of land was owned by the SLC and zoned as special green space. Johnson and the bid team were in discussions with Ipswich City Council to have it transferred back to council to make it easier for the state to fund the training facility. That transfer has since happened. "I am thinking of sending (Lions chairman) Angus Johnson a bill for a million bucks as a finders fee," Johnson said.

"We have found the location for their training base."

no
they just give some an unfair leg up at the expense of others

ie a club in the expansion states will get an extra million plus in the salary cap... paid by the VFL ... & extra draft selections
to poach the best players from clubs in the heartland

but
this isn't a problem though is it ? :-k

dumbest fucks on the planet

at least the NRL treats everyone of its clubs regardless from where they are .... equally !!

& they need it cockhead

they are a financial basketcase
they'd be long gone if the VFL didn't keep propping them up as would about 8 other clubs....

& while the egotistical VFL keeps shelling out tens of Millions each year .. just to keep their struggling clubs afloat , that's ..just afloat & operational for that year & not addressing the debts they have
they will always be bailing them out , as they won't let clubs die naturally .... meaning funds for grass roots development will continue to shrink to the point where there'll be none very soon

the NRL's money issues are miniscule in comparison
its clubs have debts ... but they aren't in the ball park of the VFL's & with the extra 800 Million that will be pumped into the code over the next 5 years
all 16 clubs will be debt free & at least breaking even
& the NRL will have a big bucket load of coin to spend on development ..... the buying of Touch football & its 1.3 Million players is just the start of what we will be doing in the next decade

be afraid fumblers
be very afraid

your codes days are numbered .....
