Get out of the way NRL, AFL rules supreme in Sydney. :<> :<> :<>
Battle of the AFL's big birds wins out over NRL
Date July 30, 2013

The AFL has had a win over the NRL, gaining access to Sydney's ANZ Stadium for the opening night of round 23.

The league was planning to advise clubs of the final-round match fixture on Tuesday, but it is understood Sydney will host Hawthorn on Friday, August 30, giving both top-four sides the longest possible break leading into September.

This is despite the NRL fixture, which was released earlier this month, listing a Bulldogs-Panthers game to be played at the same venue that night, and tickets to that game being available for purchase.

Hawthorn had been pushing to play on the Friday night given it had a day less than Sydney to prepare for last year's grand final, despite finishing higher on the ladder and winning its first final.

It was also Channel Seven's preference for the Swans-Hawks game to be played on Friday night, with the other option for Hawthorn to play on Saturday afternoon or in a twilight game, allowing the club time to return to Melbourne that night.

While the Hawks' run home includes games against Richmond, Collingwood and the Swans, only a disaster would cause them to fall from the top four.

Securing ANZ Stadium means the AFL will likely schedule the Essendon-Richmond match for Saturday night at the MCG, with Collingwood to meet North Melbourne at the same ground on the Sunday.

The Port Adelaide-Carlton clash looms as perhaps the most crucial game of the round, with the Power tucked just inside the top eight and the Blues one game behind - the only side outside the eight with a realistic hope of squeezing in.

Port Adelaide had asked for a final-round Friday night match as part of the club's official fixture request, given the game will be the last played at AAMI Stadium ahead of next year's move to Adelaide Oval, but that request does not seem to have been granted.

Fremantle will most likely play St Kilda on Saturday afternoon at Etihad Stadium, giving the fifth-placed Dockers time to fly back to Perth and prepare for the start of their finals campaign, which could yet require further travel.

Geelong will host the Brisbane Lions at Simonds Stadium, a game that could also be played on the Saturday.

Gold Coast will play Greater Western Sydney, the Western Bulldogs will finish their season against Melbourne, and West Coast will play Adelaide.

An ANZ Stadium spokesperson did not return calls, while a NRL spokesperson said: "There is a possible clash of dates and a number of discussions are taking place."

If the NRL and it's fans (namely you) aren't that worried why did you just post 3 times and why was it on the NRL website they said this:-

NRL Scheduling Statement on ANZ Stadium
The NRL will amend its draw to resolve a scheduling clash for the Round 25 match between the Bulldogs and Panthers at ANZ Stadium in Sydney.

The NRL is working with the Bulldogs and the Stadium to resolve the issue.

“We are in a situation where despite the best of intentions on all sides a clash has occurred and we are looking at rescheduling the order of our games,” NRL Director of Marketing and Commercial, Mr Paul Kind, said today.

Because the NRL had as much clout as the DLP has in Australian politics - nothing, nada, zip, zilch and extinct ! And don't it burn you up inside! Your really really really hurting now aren't you RD!

Uhhh no, the AFL had never booked ANZ Stadium last year so how exactly were they kicked out? Dumbarse.

Do you think the AFL would allow the Storm to access Etihad Stadium for a "big game" if a small AFL game was scheduled there already between for example, Melbourne and North? No chance in hell.

Seen the thread on LU yet Dementedave? It's worth a look.

Stewie, don't make Dave "Allen" look smart. The AFL did indeed book ANZ Stadium in 2012. Very first game Swans v Giants game - **** others.

But apart from that.......

Dave, the NRL have LOST TICKETS! That's money OUT of their pocket! And the way they're going with revenue at the gate, you bet they would kick up a stink! And they were told to STFU!

ahhhhh
they don't even sell tickets to club games you minda
the Bulldogs would as its their home game

& to a nothing game
they'd of sold only about 200 tickets , as they crowd of 11 or 12K will nearly all be Dogs members or stadium members

they'll put it on the Thursday
150 of those who bought tickets will be fine to go then
the other 50 will get refunds to the tune of about $1000

big ... fucking .... deal

I can assure you
if it were the round 26 game between Souths & the Roosters at ANZ.. or the round 24 game between Souths n the Bulldogs
that the NRL had booked in

guess who'd be told to take a hike

Yeah keep telling yourself that - an utter disregard for the truth is exactly what RD needs now with plummeting crowds a downturn in TV audience and now getting kicked off their home ground for the BIGGEST footy club in Sydney - ignoring facts is his thing - but don't worry we know your hurting now RD and the pain just won't go away!

Canterbury Bulldogs get ANZ Stadium punt for the AFL

UPDATE: NEW Canterbury boss Raelene Castle has ruled out Belmore Oval as an alternative venue for the Bulldogs' round 25 clash with Penrith after it was embarrassingly bumped from ANZ Stadium by the AFL.

The NRL is scrambling to re-schedule the August 30 match after the AFL announced on Tuesday the former Olympic stadium would host Sydney and Hawthorn in a final-round blockbuster on the same night. Castle, who took over from Todd Greenberg as chief executive on Monday, said the fixture bungle had put the Bulldogs in a "very challenging situation'' because any solution had to be favourable to all parties involved - including the Nine Network and Fox Sports. "We're talking to (NRL director of marketing and commercial) Paul Kind and he's liaising with the two broadcasters to make sure that we can get the right outcome,'' she told Triple M on Wednesday. "It gets really complicated because it's about highlight games, live games, delayed games. "When you throw a combination of all of those things in with the AFL and NRL not having fixed schedules for those last set of games, it makes the puzzle very complicated.''. Possible options are to move the match to Thursday night or switch venues if it is to remain a Friday fixture. The fact the Bulldogs have to back up the following Thursday night in Brisbane means the game has to be played by Saturday at the latest. Castle said hosting the match at the Bulldogs' traditional home ground at Belmore was not on the cards. "That's something that the board have talked about - some day in the future taking an NRL game back to Belmore is something the Bulldogs would like to do,'' she said. "Right at the moment, the ground is not quite in the right place to host an NRL game of this quality.''. In a major embarrassment, the NRL backed down to the AFL over the scheduling stuff-up at ANZ. It has the potential to force a complete reshuffle of all final round NRL games that will decide the top eight. The Bulldogs would be reluctant to lose their last home game, given they could be fighting for a top-four finish. Kind could give no indication when the game would be played. "We are uncertain at this point," he said. "We are looking at what options are available and working with the Stadium and the Dogs on solutions." Asked why the NRL backed down to AFL, Kind could not offer a clear reason. "Not because we made the mistake." he said. "You can simplify it if you need to but where we are is we thought we were in a position to lock that match in for the Friday night and in the end the AFL has been granted that spot by the Stadium." Asked if it was the Stadium's fault, Kind said: "It was the Stadium's decision. "At a point not long ago all parties thought they had it solved. In the end it ended up both parties were looking at Friday night. At one point we thought it was Saturday night." But it is understood the NRL should have been fully aware of this potential scheduling disaster all year. The AFL only schedules three games a season at ANZ and it is understood the Swans and Hawthorn game was pencilled in to be played on either the Friday or Saturday night. All parties were aware the Swans game would take priority. An AFL spokesman said they had been assured by officials they could have the night for some time. But that didn't stop the NRL selecting the Bulldogs-Panthers game on the Friday night regardless.

How embarrassing and incompetent do the NRL look? Selling tickets to a game without a stadium booked. The arrogance in thinking they could just push the AFL who had the stadium booked out of the way is unbelieveable.

Hilarious to read today they still don't know what to do now at NRL HQ and the whole round looks like being affected along with finals. Way to go NRL. :(/
