Ill just have to suck it up and apologise to Dave . My intent when writing it was to mean he had no rl club in his area where we lived. Not even a leauge . So Dave, you were right on this one and I apologise . For the record I did know of the rl comp in Melbourne as saw the ground once so was aware of there being a comp ... Lol 38000 school players . Dreaming. Pies go to the rl Vic website ... It's a tad amateurish but figures are there I think. There's some like 13 clubs across Victoria I think ...1 leauge . I tell you what though the Perth rl website is very professional and looks like a decent rl presence there ... No where near AFL or soccer but you can sense done growth. I Victoria as we know very little rl ... Baseball is bigger and hockey . The storm are visiting schools though and maybe that's the 38000 Dave is talking about. Tom Goodwin, the son of former Demons star Andy, and former Victorian under-14s captain Cameron Hansen are at the vanguard of a bold counterattack by the NRL on its rival code - in the heart of enemy territory.

And The Daily Telegraph can reveal the Victorian Government is backing the foray.

Following revelations yesterday that the AFL's second Sydney team has bombed, it has emerged the Victorian Government is giving rugby league $400,000 a year to take it to the AFL in Melbourne.

"The ARL committed a series of games down here," Victorian ARL development officer Dylan Hides said. "They included State of Origin matches and the World Cup. The Victorian Government came in to bed with us to put some serious money into the development of the game."

Former Kangaroos fullback Greg Brentnall, who also played senior AFL, is rugby league's general fighting for the code in Bleak City.

A Daily Telegraph investigation can reveal:

THE ARL, Victorian Government and Melbourne Storm are spending a combined $1.4 million to develop rugby league in the southern state;

RUGBY league club registrations have doubled in the past four years to 1450;

SINCE 2006, $8 million has been ploughed into Victorian rugby league;

A NATIONAL pathway to the NRL has been established with a Melbourne SG Ball (under-18) side and a Toyota Cup (under-20) side established;

RUGBY league has 94 teams playing in weekend competitions in Victoria, and;

MORE than 34,000 players participated in rugby league through Victorian schools.

"We are making steady inroads into the market on the back of our investment and the success of the Storm," Brentnall told The Daily Telegraph at a school rugby league carnival on the outskirts of Melbourne. "Even last year our club numbers went up 24 per cent which was very good in the current climate."

Like the AFL in Sydney, rugby league has recorded stunning growth in Melbourne schools with Joey League - a similar program to AusKick.

"Our biggest growth area is the schools," Brentnall said. "We have been able to put on some serious staff with the money.

"We have eight full-time development officers and a development boss. We also have a cultural officer (ex-Storm player Matt Rua)."

1st all the players you mentioned are all from NSW not Victoria - look them up dumbass - 2nd the state Gov gave grants to RU, Soccer, hockey etc look it up dumbass - lastly you are quoting 2009 sources - they have 13 clubs with 1st, 11 junior affiliates with under 14's and u16's clubs not 94 - perhaps you should use some up to date figures - lastly there is no school childrens comp - those numbers are school visits by storm players (and are also included in a RL experience numbers). There is NO PRESENCE in Victoria Sth Eastern suburbs or Eastern Suburbs only a small area around Werribee. And it is losing clubs! Dying out - in your mind thats about 200 mil the NRL has wasted on this game in Melb!

So at the moment we have a source of 1450 regiested players from 2009. So it might be around that mark, or a bit higher or lower. Anyone got a source more recent then that? Say 2011 or 2012.

Excellent finally someone with an answer. That's all I wanted to know. RL in Vicis growing and that is good to see. Massive increase. I went on to the site and they had a few interesting comps going. I was going to try to could the teams to get a rough guestimate. Feel free to close the thread. Mods we got an answer for once, thanks to Phelpsy.

Dave you're full of shit for the most, however i have a general respect for your RL knowledge, and I enjoy your trolling style. I never said you were wrong, this was all about finding out the truth, because i have never seen a solid source for the Victorian RL numbers. The only thing this thread could do now is work out the break down of juniors, seniors and aus tag numbers etc.

Being man enough to do research - it appears there is a local team in Bayswater Vic - it has u14's, U12's, U10's, U9's, U8's and U6's. it is apparently in Coldchester Road. Anyway they play Saturday so I may even take my boy along as I want him to enjoy all sports.
