This is great to hear from the NZ Prime Minister. The crowd in Wellington on Thursday evening put all other codes to shame. I hear the game was great for tourism NZ too with 100% of hotels booked out in Wellington. Hope Vlad and AFL HQ were taking notice.Swans4ever wrote:Yep heres the link http://m.theage.com.au/AFL/AFL-news/we- ... 2ihk7.html.
The relevant part is
"Earlier in the night, New Zealand Prime Minister John Key firmly placed a New Zealand-based AFL team on the agenda.
Speaking at an official pre-game function, Key, who was seated alongside Australia's Minister for Sport, Kate Lundy, and Demetriou, said the unique relationship between the countries, coupled with a fierce mutual sporting rivalry, made the concept a perfect platform for the Australian game.
''Let's get real,'' he said. ''We've got to get a New Zealand side in the AFL. We've got the Breakers and we've got the Warriors - well, they've been struggling a bit lately - we need our own AFL team.''

Anyone who thinks ANY AFL team, new or introduced, would be embraced by New Zealand is delusional beyond belief. They hate it almost as much as I do

Re: NZ PM "We Want an AFL Team"
i think that its a bold and a smart move by the AFL to play a premiership game in NZ each year as it could in the future bring more revenue in TV but to think that an AFL team in NZ would be successful is abit naive. like our pollies i would take what NZ's prime minister said with a grain of salt.

It's premiership games per season in NZ. The AFL has developed a formalae for expansion which involves top end AFL games and bottem end Auskick (Kiwikick in NZ). Both of those initiatives are doing well.214Four wrote:i think that its a bold and a smart move by the AFL to play a premiership game in NZ each year as it could in the future bring more revenue in TV but to think that an AFL team in NZ would be successful is a bit naive.
It's the first step. I imagine the second second step is to increase the number of NZ games.
It seems quite clear what the NZ PM and the Wellington City Council said. If anything they are the oness that are a bit naive in what it takes to run an AFL club. You will note VLad's response or lack of response.214Four wrote:i would take what NZ's prime minister said with a grain of salt.
The big difference is that here we have a city and nation that publicly wants AFL. Already we have seen good media which is a positive sign. It was the total opposite in Sydney with only the huge amount of negative publicity probably ending up as a positive.
Nice try Cos.

Re: NZ PM "We Want an AFL Team"
interest in an exhibition game is completly different to interest that would be shown in a NZ based team, the AFL bosses are not stupid, they would be aware of this (like how you mentioned that VLAD made no comments) and keep the NZ experience at its strength which would be a game or two a year in NZ, any more than a couple games and the NZ games financial incentives would start to quickly diminish

The NZ prime minister wants an AFL team because it would bring his country more money. Thats the bottom line.

Biggest sporting crowd in NZ last weekend was for an AFL game. Easily the biggest crowd too. Wow, who would've thought eh? Way to go AFL.
