''Physically, AFL is a two-hour running game where two things happen,'' says Gibbs. ''Firstly, the total distance you run is further than in an NRL game. Secondly, you run at a higher intensity during the game. AFL is a man-on-man game. You have to go with your opponent.
''In rugby league, there are lots of times you can have a rest. You can sit in the defensive line where the ball isn't. Folau will have to lose weight to run better. He doesn't need all his size.'' Similarly, Inglis would have to sacrifice weight for running capacity. The Storm are encouraging Inglis to run two kilometres a game. In AFL, he must run 14km. Gibbs believes the AFL has targeted the wrong NRL type in its recruiting, although the Herald wrote a year ago that its long-term aim in signing Hunt and Folau is to send a signal to Polynesian youth, an observation confirmed this month by AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou when he wrote to every AFL player justifying the lavish spending as marketing dollars for the development of players of South Pacific ancestry.

Here's the truth

Its about intensity, not just distance. Note above, AFL players run up to 14kms, NRL players only a few

At first I was going to correct you re AFL playing time , but I guess you're right re ball in play. As the clock stops between goals, out of bounds , ball ups etc , they are actually on the growing longer than 80 minutes ... And they are on the move for most part of when the clock is stopped .

Playing time for for rl and AFL is now BOTH 80 minutes.
Not only does the average AFL player run further but as dodgey dave pointed out, because of the interchange function of the AFL. an AFL player spends LESS time on the ground to run FURTHER.
Thanks again dave for your input showing the superioty of AFL over rl.

George is actually quite quick for a big bloke ... ova short distances of course , very very hard to stop when wound up ova 20 or 30m.
I can just imagine a VFL player in front of George with the task of stopping him in full stride

Dave, are you really suggesting that nrl players have the same level, or more , of anaerobic fitness as AFL players . I have yet to meet or hear anyone say that until now . They are different games . Nrl players require a different level / type of fitness for the strength based nature if that game . They are two different games , with different skill sets . It's like comparing the 10000 meters to the 100 meters. Both are skilled athletes but requires different type of fitness and strength .

Also I would hazard a guess that your actual playing time for AFL would be about 100 min with a standard deviation of about 5 min
