http://www.roxbydownssun.com.au/story/1 ... tes/?cs=12The ''normalisation'' of betting in rugby league may be the reason for a dramatic disparity between the gambling habits of the code's supporters compared to the general population, says former Tom Brock scholar James Connor.
Figures provided to Fairfax Media by Roy Morgan Research showed people over 18 who said they supported an NRL club were 72 per cent more likely than non-league supporters to have gambled in the past three months. They were 55 per cent more likely to have played a poker machine, 74 per cent more likely to have used a TAB to place a bet and 69 per cent more likely to have used the internet to have placed a bet.
The figures showed AFL supporters, too, gambled more than the general population, but much less so than NRL supporters.

And?
"The Victorian game may be the best game of football, but if it is so manifestly superior, one would fancy it could plead its own cause, and not require advertising like a quack pill."

Well there's plenty you could read into that finding.
How does socioeconomic standing and even education relate to gamblers?
What does it say about RL as an interesting sport? Is it just the gambling that keeps many interested? Maybe that explains the poor attendance

I think it's the pokies cultrue that's now ingrained in nRL fans minds because of them being encouraged to gamble at leagues clubs to keep their team alive. For shame.

Yawn. We all know RL is the toughest game going in this country and hence a far greater proportion of the working class form its supporter base. Who funded this dud research?
