The AFL even said the ACC indicated Essendon players may have been given illegal substances without their knowledge.

Given Essendon players signed consents insisting the supplements were legal I'd say thats ground for leniency.

THEN ASADA come out and say special circumstances like this would avoid a ban.

The former head of the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority says the future of the National Rugby League is under a cloud.

Richard Ings is calling for five key NRL (National Rugby League) clubs to follow the lead of the Cronulla Sharks and investigate whether their management has put them at risk of committing doping offences.

On the opening weekend of the NRL season, the Cronulla Sharks have sacked or stood down five key staff members, including their popular coach Shane Flanagan.

The Sharks are one of the six NRL clubs named in an Australian Crime Commission report into organised crime and drugs in sport, which is currently under investigation by the anti-doping authority.

The preliminary findings of an internal review by the Sharks found significant management failures, prompting the mass exodus that we saw yesterday.

Former Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority (ASADA) boss Richard Ings claims the doping scandal fallout at Cronulla could be a blueprint for what will happen at other NRL and AFL clubs.

The most dramatic week in the Sharks' chequered existence came to a stunning crescendo on Friday night when four key staff members were sacked and coach Shane Flanagan stood down, just two days out from their opening game of the season.

The move was made as a result of "serious management failures" during the three-month period in 2011 when sports scientist Stephen Dank worked at the club.

The sackings came just days after as many as 14 players were reportedly offered six-month bans for - unknowingly or not - allegedly taking banned substances.

With five other NRL clubs along with AFL club Essendon also named in the Australian Crime Commission report into the widespread use of drugs in sport, Ings told the Nine Network on Saturday that the happenings at Cronulla could be just the beginning.

"Maybe not over the next week or two but over the next month or two, you're going to see the Cronulla situation as a blueprint for what is likely to happen with several other clubs in the AFL or the NRL," Ings said.

"You'll see players who will either admit to being involved in doping or be prosecuted for doping offences.

"This is not trivial. It is a very serious doping matter being investigated and there will be sanctions for those involved."

UPDATE: THREE Manly players are in the crosshairs of anti-doping authorities over banned performance-enhancing peptide CJC-1295.

The Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority has told the Sea Eagles there is evidence to suggest three NRL stars face bans of up to two years.

ASADA has offered to reduce the ban to six months in exchange for the players providing "substantial assistance".

In a statement today, Manly denied receiving requests from ASADA to interview their players. But News Limited has been told Manly have been red-flagged by ASADA because three players allegedly sourced CJC-1295 away from the club's headquarters and without its consent or knowledge.

"We have made it clear to ASADA from the outset that we will cooperate with them in every way and they have said only that they may want to question players and club staff as part of their wider investigation at some time,” Sea Eagles general manager David Perry said.

THIRTY-ONE rugby league players will be interviewed as ASADA steps up its investigation into alleged doping in the NRL.

But that number may swell considerably once the interviews get under way, concedes ARLC CEO Dave Smith.

"As they (ASADA) get into the detail, things may change," Smith said at a press conference today.

See the Sharks Captain and coach on the weeken?. They're shattered and stressed out, can't sleep, can't play rugby the stress is getting to them so badly. Essendon meanwhile, top of the ladder. Not a care in the world. Why is this?

Reminds me of a systems audit that occured a few years ago at my old job. They were investigating fraud, checking people's logs and conducting interviews to uncover if tender information had been leaked to a certain company. A collegue - i'll call him Andrew - and I were scheduled for an interview on the same day, our logs having been audited earlier that week. I was a cool as a cuccumber, knowing full well that I hadn't done anything wrong, and that any investigation would confirm this. Andrew was freaking out. The stress was killing him, he was a sweaty mess and hadn't been sleeping. The difference being that unlike myself, it turns out he hadn't obeyed the rules and had infact actively breached them by leaking confidential tender information.

The way the Sharks captain acted on the weekend was the spitting image of Andrew's mannerisms that morning.
