they broke team rules where alcohol consumption is concerned when in treatment for an injury.

the Club has an unshakeable culture
it does not tollerate any violations of its rules , regardless of the player & his profile

unlike many gutless sides from south of the border who allow their star fumblers to do anything , only to get thrashed with a wet lettuce [-X [-X [-( [-(

This sums up the culture the raiders are trying to create.

It was everywhere you looked. The competition was not even one game old and Anthony Watmough was saying, yeah, he had a rib problem but it just meant he was going to have to needle up each week.

For the next six months.

Sam Burgess rolled over the top of Sonny Bill Williams last Thursday and then spent the next 10 minutes making sure that Sonny Bill knew his war was personal.

Adam Reynolds climbed from the deck with blood pulsing from his face after a stray elbow, a big zipper in its place the next day, and gave it no more than a second thought.

Anybody who watched the Cowboys on Saturday night would have seen Johnathan Thurston proving the difference not just with his soft hands, which is the only part of him that is soft, but with defensive efforts against broken play that show what a marvel he is.

Everywhere ...

Jarrod Mullen suffered a suspected broken bone in his arm and played on until the game was in keeping.

Mitch Pearce climbed from the deck, unbroken.

Then came Josh Dugan, in what appeared a timely reminder that toughness is an everyday thing. A discipline, and not everyone gets it.

Dugan played poorly against Penrith on Sunday.

I walked into the Penrith shed after the game and one of the first things said to me was: "How soft is Dugan?"I said Dugan supposedly had busted rib cartilage, which elicited only small sympathy and which, as it turns out, was misplaced. Not long after, Dugan, with his busted rib cartilage, dived into a swimming pool in front of his incredulous teammates at their recovery session.

Sore ribs? Already his teammates are sick of him not training, too injured to finish the session. Sick of him not playing that weekend, injured again. He wears more tape than an old trotter.

Most worrying for him, the leadership group at Canberra has had enough.

Which really brings us back to the original point. Somewhere, between the kiss-asses that flock to footballers, Dugan has failed to buy into rugby league's values.

Dugan's fellow roof reveller Blake Ferguson - together they bring new meaning to a night on the tiles - is forgiven his wayward distractions by teammates because, as one rock-solid witness said: "They know he's loose but at least he has a go on the field."

Rugby league figured out long ago that the only way to improve, and keep improving, is to continually go outside your comfort zone.

The body adapts to whatever stimuli is put to it. It is in a constant state of flux, growing or shrinking in response to the workload required. Nowadays, cricketers bowl 20 overs and are told to take the next Test off. Let your body recover, high performance manager Pat Howard says.

The cricketers must be embarrassed that they bowl 20 overs and given the next match off while NRL players slog through 80 minutes of Origin and, before their body has even cooled down in the dressing room, they are treating injuries and starting their recovery because they've got another game in 48 hours.

NRL dressing rooms are confronting places for anybody not prepared for what they will see. Coaches look on at players with private admiration. They watch them get up and get busy even though they have injuries that would stop the rest of us.

Rugby union and cricket have gone the other way to rugby league, blinded by sports science.

Cricket is being destroyed by the rotation policy, creating a generation of soft cricketers. The trouble in India right now only highlights it.

The Wallabies haven't won a physical contest against the All Blacks for 10 years.

This culture of toughness is missing. They don't understand it.

If players are forever being rested once their workload is up, like our cricketers, how will they ever push through? How can they increase their limit if they never near it?

NRL players, driven by their coaches, understand this.

They are tough and honest and brave, and their bravery is always underestimated.

That's why Dugan is in serious doubt to keep his job when the Canberra board meet tomorrow. It's not the drinking itself. It's the failure to buy into the team culture, to sacrifice and play through the hurt. Not every player gets it, and not every club, either.

The clubs that understand best, though, are the ones that play in September.

This Dugan situation is pretty funny. Not as funny as the time one of your players f*cked a dog, but still pretty funny.

The Canberra player spitting on another person was also quite amusing.

Ahhh Raiders players, they're a special lot. They have some special fans as well.

what vicky kicky club would have the ballz to sack their highest paid & highest profile player

I mean we know players at VFL clubs all get up to the same shit as these 2 have
its just swept under the carpet by the gutless officials that run these failing clubs

but not the Raiders
Josh ..... good luck with the rest of your playing career
