Yes but take into account the AFL are funding expansion of 220m over 5 years with the deal they have and we smash you guys to bits.

NRL 1.225m

Telstra to sign $100m NRL digital rights deal

Telstra is set to sign a sponsorship and digital rights agreement worth over $100 million with the Australian Rugby League Commission as early as Wednesday – the latest deal in its push for more sports rights.

The deal means Telstra will continue as major sponsor of the NRL competition, extending the six-year, $90 million deal it signed in 2007.

Although the new deal is expected to have the same annual value as the previous agreement, it is understood Telstra will now have rights to broadcast NRL matches live via mobiles, tablets and Internet protocol TV, as well as at least some of the digital rights for the three weekly matches telecast by the Nine Network. It previously held all the NRL digital rights.

Fox Sports, which has rights for the other five NRL matches every week, gained the IPTV and tablet rights for the matches it will broadcast when the ARLC signed its five-year, $1.05 billion agreement with Fox and Nine in August.

That agreement allows Fox Sports to telecast its NRL matches via the new Foxtel Go tablet app, over which is also broadcasts most A-League soccer matches. Telstra has the digital rights, including mobile handset, internet and tablet rights, to show AFL matches under the terms of an agreement signed last year.

The ARLC still has to finalise its Sydney radio rights agreement, and its New Zealand broadcast rights.

The radio rights are likely to be won by John Singleton’s Macquarie Radio Network, owner of incumbent broadcaster 2GB and Southern Cross Media.

The NRL is also yet to finalise its new collective bargaining agreement with its players and the amount each club will pay the players under the league’s salary cap. NRL chairman John Grant has held a series of meetings with players in recent days, although it is understood an agreement is not close to being finalised.
Am I reading this right.Telstra already pays 15million and now it's going to pay 20 with the media rights. What a farce.lol As it says most digital rights were already sold. So the grand total for media rights 25 million.
Isnt it a new deal? It says the 15m deal ends 2013.
To me it reads that they had signed an extension of the old deal for around the same value with digital rights and naming rights thrown in. Last year they paid 15 million for naming rights alone. Will have to see the details but it is a lot less than the afls

We are obviously not counting the 225 war fund being spent on fighting the AFL. How is it different from expansion

So the NRL arent spending any?

What about their own futures fund? Increased grants to all clubs?

Face it, even with NZ thrown in the NRLs deal is worth less irrespective of what each code chooses to spend their money on.

Just on this - and I havent troubled myself to read the whole thread

Im almost certain there is a bit of a deal at the moment where the rugby league players union are concerned they arent getting their mites out of the future fund. The Commission has set aside $225 million for the NRL future fund - done specifically with the amount set aside by the AFL in mind.

The Telstra deal as reported today includes a 5 year extension of the 15 million a year naming rights deal, meaning that Telstras mobile and 3 game IPTV deal would be worth $5 million a year or 25 mllion in total (as opposed to the 155 million paid to the AFL). The NZ deal has been reported as having an upper likelihood of 100 million (as opposed to the pennies if anything that the AFL get for them), radio rights will add 2 million according to Roy Masters (as opposed to the 23.2 million paid to the AFL). The known - but as yet not completely finalised version of the nrls media rights is worth 1.025 billion (+ a possible 30 million for an extra thursday game apparently paid for by Channel 9, kept secret from Foxtel, and not in the heads of agreement signed in August). With that in mind, and based on presently reported figures if they signed as they are:

NRL total: 1.152 Billion (includes Origin and 4 nations, Toyota Cup, NSW Cup, QLD Cup, NSW Schoolboys Cup, Premiership season, City v Country, Anzac test, Anzac Day match, + 2 hours of rugby league content on a 9 digital channel per day)
AFL Total: 1.272 Billion (includes Foxtel Cup, UNder 18s Championship, Premiership Season, NAB Cup, International Rules).
That's what I get except I think you'll find that the 30 million was,an advance rather than extra. Also 80 million more likely for NZ deal.

Ah, I think I understand this now. Telstra already had a naming rights deal for 15m. Now theyve extended it to naming rights plus media for 20m.

So 5m per year media rights? :-k

So the NRL could end up with 925m cash, 25m media, 80m NZ, and 100m contra. A grand total of 1.13m....

This is quite interesting. The NRL had already sold quite a bit of their online rights to fox probabaly in order to show a 1 billion dollar TV deal (a bit of spin). I still thought that they would have gotten more then 25 million for the rest of it, but perhaps the FTA component is not worth that much with it easily streamed through devices similar to the optus one and with only one game live.
Just out of curiousity how much did the AFL get for their naming rights?

Well technically speaking fox payed for a majority of the media rights by the look of it already in their component, so it is probabaly going to be impossible to work out how much the TOTAL media rights are worth. What we do now know is that the NRL will get about 1.2 billion for TV/online/phone/naming rights which is a big boost for the comp and great for their future.

Either way, even with media rights of 15m per year  , the NRL will have 925m cash, 100m contra, 75m media (cough cough), making a total of 1.1m.

Therefore NZ need to pay 153m for the NRL to beat the AFL...

not sure how you got 1.2m.

Cash and contra was 1.025m. NZ will be 100m max. Their cash component already includes some media rights for foxtel leaving Telstra paying 100m for media and naming rights when the naming rights alone were worth 75m over 5 years.

So even with naming rights and nz included the NRL are looking at 1.225m

Poor Dave, now it must be time to march out the "more money per game" defense!
