Problem is with so few fans going to games why would they bother upgrading stadiums? Theyll never get a return.

What would one prefer? A drop in attendance average due to a 150% rise in the number of games played in expansion states? Or no growth with no expansion?

more & more games in bigger stadia ... equals larger attendances & a growing average in unison with an ever growing membership base
they'll be several Sydney sides with over 30K members by 2017
there'd be no room for them in small suburban grounds ....

our strategic plan essentially alludes to this

have all the strategic plans you want. RL fans consistently prefer TV to attendance. I can't see that changing quickly

as we double our memberships in the next 5 years .... a % of these new members will engage their clubs at games on top of the core support they already have at games
the Broncos will have well ova 40,000 members by 2017 .. the Bulldogs .. Dragons .. Souths .. Newcastle .. all 30,000 .. Parra , the Tigers ... even the Storm ..20,000
all big games in Sydney involving the above ... at ANZ or the SFS
all pulling 30K plus

More games, more crowds in Sydney (up about 60% on last year), more crowds in Tasmania (up 100% on 2 yrs ago), more crowds in Brisbane (up 50% on 2 yrs ago)...

There's one club who should actually be worried about this and that's Manly. They'll only go to Brookvale.

If I remember my reading of opinions in Melbourne papers, there is some critcism of the dumping of suburban grounds for poor drawing matches. That is, when locals play interstate teams. I think they were saying that they should be playing those poor drawing games at Visy Park. If so then I agree, and not just because it would give the Storm some room to make a play for Etihad!! Smaller venues cost less to run. So if for example West Tigers play their poor drawing games at either Leichardt or Campbelltown and the big ones at Allianz or ANZ it would work and be cost effective. Cronulla can do the same and so could Penrith. But they should keep their grounds for games.

Manly want the upgrade because they know their fans won't travel, even to Allianz. Packs of losers the lot of them. But they have the money on the north shore themselves so they should fund it privately. I guess the issue is government permission. I don't like the Sea Eagles fans and they should be prepared to travel, but that's no reason to force them out of their home ground any more than any other club.

given that the majority of AFL teams have memberships over the capacity of suburban grounds I'd say they'd be fine with it..

Why would a Melbourne AFL team want to play at a suburban ground with poorer facilities when their membership base exceeds the grounds capacity? Let alone the fact that leaves little room for walk up general public. Far better spending revenue on decent stadiums not splitting it **** smaller grounds.

Because they can't fill the bigger stadiums when they play poor opponents (Giants, Suns......) and could not cover costs that way!

Hawthorn and the kangaroos play games in Tasmania. They sacrifice 15-20k a game for this expansion. There are also less local derbies because teams are more spread through the country.

Something the NRl know little about,

Tasmania should have it's own club! Hawthorn and North Melbourne should be playing their poor drawing games at Visy Park to gain maximum profit.
