of 2.5 Million ..... & have now lost $10 million over the last 5 years
all the but but butting in the world cannot excuse this inept ... poor mangement
one of a long list to come ...
VFL .. on its knees

http://www.news.com.au/sport/AFL/lions- ... 6521576561

BRISBANE Lions want urgent talks with the Queensland Government about their crippling Gabba tenancy deal after announcing a $2.5 million loss yesterday.

The Lions posted a net operating loss of $2,513,262 for the financial year ending October 31. It was Brisbane's third-straight seven-figure loss. They lost $2.5 million in 2010 and another $1.8 million last year.

The Lions also recorded a $603,207 loss in 2009 and a $2.2 million loss in 2008.

Brisbane chairman Angus Johnson yesterday called for calm and assured members about the club's future.

Johnson said he was "really confident" the club would soon be in the black.

The final figure was a result of depreciation and interest costs relating to the Lions social club at Springwood, Johnson said.

He said negotiation with the State Government over the rental agreement at the Gabba was Brisbane's top priority.

"We have a stadium agreement that is no longer appropriate," Johnson said.

"It is due to be re-negotiated in a couple of years anyway but the whole thing really does need to be looked at.

"We will be having discussions with the Government about how we can work with them to end up with an outcome that works for them and makes it more equitable from our point of view."

Johnson said speculation the Lions would close their Melbourne office was incorrect and the Etihad Stadium-based operation would remain open.

He said the prospect of better on-field results would also help the club's bottom line.

Brisbane's 2012 financial report revealed the club's total turnover was $43.9 million, while the Springwood social club had a turnover of $13.7 million. The football department's expenditure for the year was $17.2 million.

Johnson said the Springwood social club remained the "jewel in the crown" of the Lions and a financial success story.

I dont think we had a loss in 2010 when we had Fev. Evvery game I went to that year at the Gabba was sold out.

Other years there has been bad crowds though cause we have not been winning or playing good football. Once this starts again the crowds will start & the money will pour in

when will you singlet wearing merkins realise ... crowds are not everything
they represent only a fraction of any clubs overall turnover

if the paddle pop wions had played ok this year & won a few more games & increased their crowds by 50% to 30,000 this year ( so an extra 10K a game )
they'd still have posted a 1 million dollar plus ... LOSS

its proof definitive.... despite Xmans attempts at finance 101 from lar lar land  ... that revenue results are not the issue for football clubs
its this .. up against costs

if your costs are out of control , if you can't manage them... like most VFL clubs are experiencing ... its troubled times ahead
troubled indeed 8-[

Its not "necessary" costs, its expenditure. The Lions are spending their money on establishing a sustainable financial model for the future. They have stated this will take 5 years. Even if they lose a few mil in the process the AFL will back them to the hilt.

a few mill ... its F..ing 10
the VFL won't have any choice but to back em .. & its just another financial drain on them... ontop of another 5 they have .. some that are in even worse shape then the broke Wions ...
the interest payments on the losses the Wions have racked up alone are up to 600K a year & I'd doubt they are even reporting these

they'd need to post a profit of this size next year just to service the interest on the debt.. ... so they still hold a 10 million debt .. it hasn't been scratched. 8-[

they have an average list ... they are a middle of the pack side at best ... at best
so things on field won't improve much in 2013

they are F'ed .... dead set ... in serious trouble

VFL... failing

The Gabba has never ever had a sell out for any vFL game, the biggest crowd is 37,224.

The Ground holds 42,000, the biggest crowd for the Gabba is 47,096 and it was Rugby League that got it.

And tell us Xman, is this establishment of a sustainable financial model for the future "ongoing"?

Clearly they've been doing it for several years now. How long do they need? "Ongoing"?

It's a big loss, and surely an ongiong concern for the AFL, but it seems the two key elements to this are:

1) big drops in crowds
2) paying off the debt on the Lions@Springwood facility at a rapid rate.

The latter will be (is?) a big money maker for the Lions into the future once the debt is paid off. The former requires the Lions to start playing good footy. That one's going to be harder for them to sort out given their facilities up there are a mess. Which will also be a problem going forward, as they'll almost certainly need to go into further debt to pay for new training facilities in the next few years.

In any case, as xman said, AFL aren't going to let the Lions go anywhere.

There have been many sellouts at the Gabba.

The reason it does not get the 42,000 is becuase BCC member dont turnup all the time just like what happens at the MCG. It was still impossible to get a ticket a few times when footy was big in Brisbane.

Go Lions
