So Bea, going to actually put in the link that the Storm itself loses $6 million a year or do I have to put in my link again that shows they can and do make a profit and the reason $6 million is given is to look after all the VRL competition?

Step up you old poof, either post the truth or be shown up in front of you're little vFL lovers here, you are nothing but a really hopeless piss poor troll, a good troll knows what they are talking about and they will make sure they can't be shown up.

That's not you though, is it.
Here's my link and proof of the massive losses year after year for the Melbourne Storm. How about you show a link where the Storm have ever made a profit? No spin please.
At the end of last year, the Storm's accounts show that it had made a $1.65 million ''profit''.

That money is believed to be a chimera - league insiders estimate that the club ran at a deficit of up to $6 million.

The Storm's lack of money is covered up by the fact that a wholly owned News subsidiary, Valimanda Pty Ltd, owns the licence from the NRL to run a club in Victoria. In legal terms, Melbourne Storm Rugby League Club then runs the team and charges Valimanda ''management fees'' to cover its costs.

In reality, Valimanda pays varying amounts to the club - $12.93 million last year and $13.62 million in 2008 - to offset the difference between how much the Storm can rake in from memberships, ticket sales, corporate sponsorships and events, and the $17 million a year it has to shell out to pay players, management and marketers.

Included in the money that News pays to the Storm is the annual ''grant'' paid to each of the NRL's 16 clubs, which last year was $3.45 million.

While the Storm's auditors, Ernst & Young, have not commented about the club's financial fragility over the years, the directors note in the accounts that the club is dependent on the drip-feed of money from News.

The Melbourne Storm website says the club has less than 8500 members (it was aiming for 10,000 this year), and that last financial year, memberships generated only $1.13 million - although that was about $260,000 better than 2008.

AFL backs Crows' self-imposed penalty

Adelaide have made a down payment on their expected heavy penalties from the Kurt Tippett saga, volunteering to give up their first two picks in Thursday night's national draft.

The extraordinary move was made on Wednesday in consultation with the AFL, with the league's football operation manager Adrian Anderson endorsing the Crows' gesture and saying it would count against any future sanction.

"This is something that will definitely be taken into account in Adelaide's favour as an appropriate step, should they be found guilty, on the question of sanction," Anderson told reporters on the Gold Coast, where the draft will be held.

The Crows have given up picks 20 and 54, with their first pick now 62.

Under AFL draft rules, they must still use three choices, meaning they will have to draft players with picks 62 and 81 although they will use their other selection, No.95, to upgrade forward Ian Callinan from the rookie list.

They have already secured highly-rated local youngster Brad Crouch through last year's mini-draft.

Adelaide, Tippett, Crows chief executive Steven Trigg, their current football operations manager Phil Harper and his predecessor John Reid will all front the AFL Commission on November 30 to answer a total of 11 charges.

Even if the club is cleared, they will not be recompensed for the draft picks given up.

That seems a clear sign that the Crows are resigned to being found guilty and made to pay a heavy price through the draft, although they described their move as a gesture of good will and common sense.

Anderson said it did not amount to an admission of guilt.

But he was happy to see the Crows opt out of the early stages of the draft.

"It's better for the game that they don't (use those picks) in all the circumstances," he said.

"I think it's the right thing and something that had to happen."

The future of Tippett, who is hoping to join reigning premiers Sydney, remains uncertain.

He potentially faces a ban from the game and will have to wait for the commission hearing to find out whether he can join the Swans as a free agent or ends up in the pre-season draft, where Greater Western Sydney are expected to pounce.

Anderson also said the prospect of further charges could not be ruled out, as investigators continued to examine the Crows' dealings.

So here we have the AFL and the crows admitting guilt to salary cap rorts over tippet and disguising it as self imposed punishment............... [-X [-X

Uh! No eels, Xman would have you believe the crows are opting out ofn their draft picks to respect the óngoing' *cough cough* investigation.

It's quite beautiful the way the crows are trying to weasel out of this one in front of all and sundry. And who could blame em? They'll prob get away with it, only losing draft picks 20 and 54...A farce of the highest order.

More like they realised it was their request to delay their hearing until after the draft in preparation for their defense that made them take the extraordinary step of forfeiting their first 2 draft picks.

I'm not sure how this is a bad thing. You guys were claiming they shouldn't be involved in the draft, and now this has effectively occurred. They will cop more penalties on top of this.

There's no getting away from it. The AFL have acted harshly on salary cap cheating a number of times and the crows know Whats coming.
I think this proves the crows have a conscience. =D>

Adelaide know that they will be punished and have given up all their useful draft picks this year in an attempt appease the AFL. They wil also lose TIppett with many people believing that he would be worth two first round draft picks. This means that so far they have lost the equivalent of 3 first round picks before the AFL has even decided to punish them.

"in an attempt to appease the AFL"

My thoughts exactly pies. What a weasel club the crows are in perpetuating the lack of integrity throughout the AFL operations of late. The only way the AFL can and should save face in this one is to hammer the crows good and hard, especially for their weasling tactics. Strip them of all points for the season and make a bloody example of the cheats so other clubs will think twice before pulling the same shite!

The NRL have truly led the way in this one and the AFL would benefit from following this lead.

I wish it would end Dave but it just friggin goes on and on. I know you're not a fan of the game but if professional Marngrook was led by an organisation which realised

a) that men, biologically, have masculine tendencies
b) what institutional racism entails and the need to address it
c) that cheating and rorting is not on
d) that it is not the "only sport" in Australia
e) that poaching players from other codes solely to promote the code is unethical
f) that the public's general conception of 'participation' in a sport does not include workshops held within schools

then, Dave, honest folk like yourself might actually give it the time of day...

A very sad state of affairs for the code.

SO without even being punished yet they have lost draft picks for 2012 and one of their best players which the salary cap breaches involved. Theyll probably cop more draft sanctions and a hefty fine. All this for foul play involving one player.

Compare that to the Storm that cheated for a number of seasons in a row and involved a large proportion of their playing list. They were hit retrospectively which did nothing to stop them succeeding in the short to medium term.

I think youve got this around the wrong way somehow Dave. WHy am I not surprised? #-o

1) AFL have a draft, which is technically a restraint of trade. Tippet (or more accurately his father) is the suing type. They're taking their time because there's every chance this greedy fk-wit will take them to court and bring down the whole bloody system.
2) This isn't so much the Crows trying to save themselves as Trigg trying to save his own job. He's a real piece of work.
3) You're criticising a punishment as being too soft, which HASN'T EVEN BEEN GIVEN YET. My gut tells me the Crows will get slammed over this. I'm predicting 2 years without draft picks, at least $500,000 in fines, and Trigg and Reid banned from working in the AFL. nRL doesn't have a draft, so 2 years without picks might not seem like a big punishment, but it's devastating to an AFL club. To say that losing picks 20 and 54 isn't significant, ignores the depth of the draft system. For example, Brownlow medalist Dane Swan went at pick 58. Adelaide's current gun forward Taylor Walker was pick 75. Tippett himself went at pick 32.

If it only took 3 days to punish the Storm did they investigate it properly?
The AFL will have to get this right and they are investigating it properly. You cant punish them before you have completed your investigation thats like hanging someone before the police have finished the murder inverstigation. If this thread is any indication then that is exactly what most RL supporters on this site would do.
