Have you forgotten the bru-ha-ha GWS and the AFL made when they recruited Izzy? It went well beyond anything else you care to name! Now look at the red faces! Izzy's back where he belongs and the Sydney media will lap it up! Suck $hit, AFL! You FAILED!!
No. That was the point. "look at me. Look at me". They deliberately did that to establish the club. Izzy was always going to return to RL. The fact he is doing it now really benefits the Giants. They are now in a perfect position to pick Tippett in the draft.

I love how furious the NRL supporters were when Izzy defected. Most vowed he would never be allowed back. They even stopped him playing SOO. Look at the now! Their all fighting over his recruitment. Short memories or just desperate?

Id love it if he chose RU!
No, we love it because Izzy realised we were right all along! Yeah "look at me. Look at me" like Kath and Kim and just as good to LAUGH at! Do you seriously think he was a temp? No sports savvy recruiter would do that! He'd get the sack!
He sure was a temp. he was there to promote the beginnings of a new expansion club, and did his job. Its perfect timing hes leaving now, they can use his pay to recruit Tippett.

Trying to make a silver lining in this black cloud now? Face facts, X, GWS have lost big time in this. Big time!

There were three main purposes for recruiting Falou:

1. To create attention so the Giants would appear regularly in the news when they began. Tick

2. To create attention from AFL/NRL sports fans who would watch to see how he would play. Tick

3. To appeal to polynesian kids and show. Fail, although K Hunt has done well in this area

So 2 out of 3 for Falou. However his departure has coincided beutifully for the giants with the availability of a genuine AFL star in Tippett so Id say theyd be pretty happy

1 and 2 aren't ticks. They are fails because he didn't stay long enough to have the effect that they would have wanted, and his departure will destroy any gains that were made.

1 and 2 have already happened. Whether he stayed longer or not would have no bearing on the massive media attention he got at his signing and his first season. The rest is just icing on the cake. The value of this media alone would well and truly have covered his 2 million dollar salary.

Isreal Folau, pictured with GWS coach Kevin Sheedy, has retired from the AFL. Picture: Fairfax Photographic
FEW would have been surprised with this week’s announcement from Israel Folau that AFL wasn’t his cup of tea and he was packing his millions and heading back to a sport he can play – rugby league.

See your ad here
The “experiment” of Greater Western Sydney (GWS) Giants to firstly lure the league star and then to actually play him on the biggest sporting stage in the nation was a bold one – and one most NRL fans would be happy to see finished.

Well, somehow I get the feeling both the Giants and the AFL might also be pretty relieved at the exercise has come to an end and in doing so, free up some significant salary cap space for someone who can play the game.

And unlike those who couldn’t wait for it to fail, I dare say the boffins at the Giants and more broadly the AFL executive would be marking the Folau file with a giant stamp “Mission Accomplished”.

While Gold Coast Sun Karmichael Hunt is likely to make the transition from rugby league to Aussie rules as a player, Folau had struggled from day one.

Dare I say it, probably the best game he played was in Wagga when he dominated up forward against a Canberra team in the club’s inaugural season in the ACTFL.

So I guess we can at least count ourselves lucky in having seen Izzy at his best.

But back to my original point, I reckon the Folau project, at least as far as the AFL is concerned, wasn’t about his on-field success, but the off-field profile of the club. And they have certainly built that.

Forget the losses, having Folau as the lead act in this Broadway production and coach Kevin Sheedy in the supporting role, the AFL has received untold publicity in western Sydney – publicity that has given the club a platform on which to build in what is a traditional NRL community.

It would be difficult to estimate the value of that publicity in dollars – but it would be well into the millions and more than compensate for the pay packet Folau has received from either the AFL or the Giants.

At the end of the day, the shrewd move from the AFL to sign up players like Hunt and Folau was always going to work – one way or another.

As far as Hunt is concerned – it’s working on two fronts.

His fledgling club has received significant publicity in Queensland – a state that has traditional ties to rugby league.

The upside for the Gold Coast is that Hunt is developing into a useful player as well – a real win-win for the Suns.

With Folau, the on-field prowess didn’t match up to the hype, but the publicity – even when he couldn’t get a touch – was priceless.

Sure, some of it was a little negative, but if you follow the maxim that any publicity is good publicity, Israel has more than repaid the club.

The Giants have been able to build a profile, build a membership and build a team of talented youngsters that will be a competitive outfit in the not too distant future.

NRL fans might be rubbing their hands with glee, but I get the feeling it’s the AFL that is having the last laugh on the Folau folly.

You are off with the pixies, X! He's gone and GWS have lost their face! That's why 1 & 2 are EPIC FAILS! They HAD to keep it going and they can't now because Izzy flipped the bird at them!

How are you not getting this? Before Izzy signed, nobody in Sydney had heard of GWS. After he signed, everybody knew of them. The amount of money it would have cost the AFL in advertisment to reach that level of brand recognition far exceeded the cost of Izzy's wage.

And now, without paying him a cent from this point on, he will continue to get GWS into Sydney media articles. Every game he plays, every ball he catches, every time he kicks, the words AFL and GWS will be mentioned. Free of charge. Over the preseason every weight session he has to return to his nRL shape will reference GWS, there will be articles asking him to compare AFL training to nRL training, to compare Ricky Stewart and Kevin Sheedy. His old team mates will no doubt attend some of his games, and visa versa, keeping GWS in the papers and on the news.

And all for free. I'm not going to change your minds, you've convinced yourselves that you've had a victory over big brother, but you need to understand that we're not putting on a brave face here, we just don't feel like losers out of this at all.
