these games are only affected by not having a post game. And only for 1 game not 4.

As I said, Dividing two games and getting one game is not similar - and its ridiculous to think so. Your really getting desperate.

A delay in Perth, 5.30 start, would give you time to get get home from work before the start of the game. A 7.30-8.00 finish as opposed to a 11.30 finish.

The AFL games are split into 3 sections this year, pre, game, post. Were the games split into 2 sections last year with a game and post match codings, or did the entire coding begin this year for AFL games?

This was their response:

That’s right, in 2011 Channel 7 coded their AFL matches into the match and an After the Game program, in 2012 they began coding a Pre Match program as well. It is the responsibility of the networks to code their programs and this process is independent of OzTAM.

If you would like further information we can create an ad hoc report for you, with the ratings and times of the matches and associated programs. The cost of an ad hoc reports starts at $586 + GST.

As per my previous email, there are several factors which can impact TV ratings and it is difficult to estimate how large a contribution each factor makes in the increase or decrease of audiences.


In all honesty, I can see why channel 7 decided to code a pre-game section this year when the pre-game portion of the telecast doubled to 20 minutes. Without doing this the overall ratings average may have actually dropped despite the game rating the same.

Im not sure how it benefits the TV stations, I would have though if you divide shows up your gaining in one area but losing in another. But it must work. According to TV tonight the use of it is ever increaseing

it benefits them because they can effectively claim ratings closer to the peak audience. For example Big Brother final decision may rate at 4M for 10 minutes but 3M over the entire program. But Ch9 and BB get bragging rights for 4M because thats what the media report and OZTAM publish.

As OZTAM said, its all about bragging rights, nothing else.

Apart from the bragging rights thing it's beneficial to know the respective attractions of pre/post/game.

Here are the Tas and WA regionals. They come to 253k. Add that to 4.190M for the AFL presentation and it rates 4.443M

Note for Dave, thinkTV posted the AFL presentation as 968k. Regional TAM also posted the AFL presentation as 968k but it clearly states "excluding Tas and Regional WA". Then they show the Tasmania and WA regional ratings were 253k.

So if all markets are incuded NRL = 4.55m, AFL 4.08 .... Not even a contest

Sorry, I gave you the NZ number for last year. this year it was, according to the NRL site 277 thousand. Still a win to the NRL.
