So out of a possible 480 players on the NRL squads of 30 we have 111 players that grew up playing outside NSW, QLD.
That is almost %25 of players not from the traditional area’s of NSW, QLD that play in the NRL =D> =D>

Now it would be interesting to see how many players from outside NSW, QLD in the toyota cup to get a gauge on how this list will look going into the future. :?:

This statement is true. The heartland of the game is somwhere in england. They did a fair job of expanding their game. Not as well as their massive counterparts ,cricket and soccer but they did penetrate into oceania. The Nrl benefits from the colonial expansion of english sports they are not responsible for these nations following league. The english are. The NRL heartland is NSW and QLD and the game in Australia has expanded very little .

Excellent thread with some good research (unike my thread i must admit). Just a quick question are you basing your research on Players born outside of NSW/Qld or just grew up playing outside of NSW and Qld. Because for example your Justin Poore played all of his junior football for the Helensburgh Tigers in Illawara and did his high school there. While Bryson Goodwin for example played all of his junior footy for Cronulla Sutherland. In your own words grew-up playing outside NSW/QLD.

This isn't a good thread it insinuates that the NRL are responsible for the expansion of rugby league around the world. That is utter bullshit. The nrl has been responsible for the expansion within Australia it can't claim players from other countries.

No it's not it benefits from the fact the game was alredy played there. How much money has the Nrl put into junior development in NZ before the warriors came on board.Judging by what is spent here not very much I suggest.

I believe that the AFL probably is about 15/20% in terms of players from outside of our heartland states. The AFL will have more players in total, but will probabaly have a lesser percentage overall. You have included ACT and NT which will give the AFL more players then the NRL if you statistics are correct. The AFL has about 850 players. I would say about 100 are from NSW/QLD 20-30 from Ireland, 10 from the teritories. 5-10 from Pacific Islands and quite a few born in NZ, although NZ raised would probabaly be another matter. I would say 140-160 from outside AFL states would be about right. I will do some research (all help would be appreciated).

I have no problem accepting that RL has expanded and has a greater international following than ARs. But as pookus said, this is not due to the NRL, but due to the influence the British empire has had globally. However, I'm also very pleased that ARs has expanded across Australia more than any winter sport, and can truly lay claim as Australia's favorite sport.
