People that follow the NRL dont just follow the NR home and away competion, and neither would followers of the AFL not if they could provide something else. The AFL are like the ugly person, sitting in the corner, the one that no one wants to dance with.
Rep games are rep games, not regular season. They are not a decent comparison of the popularity of both codes. They are stand alone events. But of course you know that without them the NRL doesn't compete at all. This highlights the difference between the codes. The NRL needs SOO and internationals to have any blockbuster games because their regular season is dull. The AFL have blockbusters weekly

Exactly. If ratings for infrequent blockbuster events are an indication of popularity the RU is far more popular than RL because of the world cup ratings. :D

And Xman can you tell me how much ratings the All Australian team gets when they play Ireland?

I don't know the ratings offhand but the games are popular in Australia and Ireland.

  that's the point dunce! Both codes have over 200 games per season. Yet RL cans claim victory on the basis of a few rep games.

Well so you would like to take away Rugby leagues strength over Aussie rules witch is its International scene.
Okay let me take away your strength the AFL season, now what are you left with to compete??
You cant dismiss leagues rep games because the AFL rep games are so horrible/non existent...
BTW it is not claimed victory it is clear victory in 2011. RL is bigger then aussie rules around the country and around the world deal with it.

So you're admitting that the NRLs strength is only about 5 games per year, SOO and a few rep games.

As I said the AFL have blockbuster games every week and the NRL a few times per year. Last night hawthorn beat Carlton in front of 65k. Regular NRL never gets over 50k and more often than not barely over 20k.

As I said before and Im sure eelofwest woul agree, the NRL's strenth is its cosistency. We dont have a competion were half the games are good and the other half arent woth watching. Our competition may not have the block busters, but it wins out with its eveness and competitiveness . and then our dominance in other areas just blows you away ... All Stars  ..Test match  ... Origin l, ll &3    ... followed by the tri-series or world cup

So 3 SOO, a few average rep games, some NRL finals and a heap of poorly attended and watched games is consistency? :-k

I agree with Pussy, at the moment the AFL competition is inconsistant. Give it 5 years and all of the teams that are inconsistant at the moment will be playing a lot better. I expect that everything including ratings are on the way up with more consistancy.

6 AFL games so far this week. 3 were decided before the end of the first quarter. 2 more were over by 3/4 quarter time.

If the AFL is sirius about shortening the length of there game they should just lop off the final quarter  - it would be the humain thing to do.
