Well its looking like the AFL is not taking away sports stars from other sports. This can only be a good thing. Looking forward to the final results here pies.

3 more teams in archery, athletics and volleyball 12/55 are officially listed from VIC but there is a lot of ACT people and I looked into them and 3-4 were VICs and most of the rest were from Qld, NSW. Steve Hooker a famous gold medal winning Victorian is listed as from WA as well. However I will go with the official number which is 12.

There have been a couple interesting articles in the hun the last few days about AFL trying to pinch Australias elite basketball players. Patrick Mills had a few talks with the Sydney Swans. Patrick Mills played top level Aussie Rules up until about the age of 16 if I rememeber correctly. There was another player Joe Ingles that Richmond had a talk to. Again he played a high level of Aussie rules as a junior.
A theory of mine is that playing Aussie rules helps elite basketballers become elite. So perhaps part of the reason why Victoria has such good basketballers comes down to them playing basketball and Aussie rules as kids. Andrew Bogart is another example of this.
Im sure AFL has taken potentially elite basketballers as well. However I would say that it has been a win/win with players from both codes overall benifiting with better all round skills.

I saw those two articles as well.
It's more like basketball taking football prospects.
In Australia most prospect choose basketball over football because they see basketball as a less dangerous sport.
Overseas there must be a lot of basketballer types that don't make it and are suitable for football.

beach Volleyball team is in 1 out of 4 so far is Victorian (women only not sure if we have a mens team). So that maintains the average of about 25%.

Coming from playing bball at a high level to playing well in marngrook I cant say I can agree with this. The skills required in bball really help fine tune 'finer motor skills' such as hand eye coordination and reflexes. The skills required in marngrook are much more focussed on 'gross motor skills' such as kicking and tackling etc... if anything i'd say the theory should be the otherway round pies. But you do mention later in your post that the skils are transferrable and both codes benefit overall, this is more correct I'd say.

Which is harder? Throwing a basketball or handballing? bouncing a basketball or bouncing an oval shaped football?

A behind the back or alleyoop pass in traffic is a much more difficult skill to learn than handballing.

Thus as i said, the skills required for bball relate to finer motor skills than in manrgrook. These finer motor skills are very helpful for marngrookers whereas the more gross motor skills applied in marngrook are not as helpful for bballers.

Give a basketball to any random person and ask them to throw it to a person 10 meters away and they'd get to them 9 out of ten times. Get them to hand pass it with their preferred and then opposite hand and they'd miss half.

Give a basketball to any random person and ask them to bounce it with either hand and they could do it easy, even running, even eyes closed. Ask them to do it with an oval shaped ball and many would fail.

I've played decent level bball too you know.
