NRL to reap $1.2b from TV rights

You might say that but I would'nt. The AFL doesn't like to admit the NRL avalanche exist for obvious resaons - The home supporters of Newcastle, Woolongong, Canberra. G Coast and Rockhampton are all ignored by the Metro Markets. Is it any wonder there such a large gap between the two codes in subsciption TV.

NZ home audience gets ignored by everybody.

The large gap in payTV subscriptions is because the AFL have a far better FTA agreement and have so for years. I only got foxtel this year. Why would I bother in previous years? There were 4 games on FTA and only 3 on fox, and these were the worst matches.

The Goldcoast is included in the Brisbane metro ratings.

The fact is the AFL is far more popular in NSW and Qld than the NRL is in Vic SA WA Tas, and the ratings prove it. The top placed storm only managed 30k for a live Friday night game from a combined audience of Mel Adel Perth, while the bottom placed suns managed 31k from Brisbane GC alone and on Saturday arvo!

RL in terms of the product of the NRL is built for TV. Every game is shown in its own timeslot with no overlap. The game itself goes for 80 minutes with little advertising. There is no suprise that the game rates well. with little advertising interuptions. The product of AFL does similar ratings, with a much longer game which can fit into it, a lot more advertising. To say that NRL rates better on PTV, in one sense is true (game by game), however in terms of timeslots the AFL again rates very similar to NRL. With no overlap even with some poor games, eg power V Hawkes (thrashing), the AFL rated about the same as the NRL on PTV despite the game being televised on FTA TV into home markets. For the next two weeks you will see similar ratings on PTV between the AFL and the NRL despite teams like GWS and Goldcoast suns getting thrashed.

What are you on about. The AFL have always had a better FTA deal and that's why foxtel never appealed to AFL fans. Combine that with the fact the 4 best matches were shown on FTA and the worst games on foxtel and that's the entire reason subscription rates were so poor in AFL states. It also the reason they are high in RL states because it's the reverse.

Don't give me this shite about AFL not being popular! we all know they win everything, crowds, tv ratings, everything.

Goldcoast is definately covered by Brisbane metro. El diablo even posted the link in the tv rights thread on Lu.

As you say the NRL has less advertising. But as shown, the FTA TV networks makes less than 25% in advertising revenue from the NRL. Thats despite the fact that the AFL has 4 matches, not 3, on FTA TV.

Saying that AFL is boring is purely subjective, however I will cop it on the chin. To say that there is a lack of interest in a game that draws almost record average attendences in a country of 20 million, and excellent ratings is ridiculous. As to overlapping games: How can I watch two games live when they are on at the same time. This a a valid point wether you see it or not.

This year the scheduling has improved but the FTa schedule is still good. In fact AFL is better on FTA in NRL states that the NRL is!

Another factor in PTV is that if you ive in WA, SA, NSW or Qld and you barack for a local team, your team is always on FTA TV. Why would you need PTV When all of your teams games are on FTA and you get 3-4 other games to watch. There is no time zone which is not covered. Friday night FTA, Sat Afternoon FTA game, Sat Night FTA game and Sunday FTA game all have games on FTA.

What are you on about until this year you could not watch an AFL game live,ever.The only games Fox showed were the 4 worst with only one exclusive time slot being Sunday twilight.Noone who supports AFL got fox for the footy simply it wasnt worth it.AFL is based around the spectator timeslots were manafactured so people could go.That is why our game in terms of attendances is a world leader.You sold your game to the networks.The only way you can watch league on a saturday is by having fox.This is there trump card and why they are unwilling to part with it.The massive uptake in AFL viewership is simply because it is now live.However you spin it more people watch AFL over the 2 formats FACT.

So the NRL last year had 5 live games on fox in HD and 3 on FTA in SD.

The AFL had 4 on fox which were the worst 4, and 4 on FTA which were the best games with 2 on HD.
