The other issue is Adelaide and Perth now have the option to watch live Friday night footy on Fox, or delayed by just over 1 hr on FTA. Compare this to last year when Perth would watch the game on 3 hrs delay when it was already finished.

These are huge points.

How else has the audience grown? Just because it's available on FTa and foxtel at the same time doesn't mean there will automatically be more viewers. Why would it?

Pretty much spot on X man. The live game is much more viewer friendly to watch. I would often listen to the radio broadcast rather then watch the one hour delayed broadcast that would finish after midnight.

In my opinion the biggest difference is the games now go from 7.30pm to 10.30pm, instead of 8.30pm to 11.30pm, and the game actually started at nearly 9 pm. You only have to look at the nRLs ratings after 9.30pm to see the massive drop in ratings for programs after this hour.

So the majority of the AFL games are now mainly in primetime instead of late at night. Combine this with live games and the audience is far larger.

I know that I would be unlikely to stay up and watch a game until 11.30 unless it was either my team or a very close contest. This would be a big issue for people getting up early for Saturday sport like I would do for golf. Now I can watch the entire game and be in bed at a normal time so I'm more likely to keep watching until the end.

The Perth issue is also huge. They are just under the size of Brisbane, so they are a significant size of our market. Imagine if Brisbane got the NRL 3 hrs delay every night and the majority of the games didn't involve the broncos. That's about 200k less viewers right there. Now they have the games live!

Which semi? What times was it shown in each market?

Note that the lower rating finals were on ch10 and many did not have the oneHD figures included.

Disagree. The finals last year outrated most of the friday nights this year. You must also consider that the Foxtel rating is a national rating. One way to approximately work out the ratings this year for metro only would be to subtract about 25% from the foxtel ratings.

So you can see that the only Friday night games that may have out rated a Friday night final was round 3 and round 8. The final that it outrated was not a good one either. The only good final last year out of those 3 were the Collingwood V Hawthron clash which rated 1.4 million metro. The other finals rated between 900-1000K and a few friday night games have beaten these games. However the finals from last year on average well and truely beat the friday night games from this year metro only.

The AFL ratings for regional FTA are also up. Only the best games rated above 50k in Tas but now we are seeing games every week rating at this level, and some up to 75k. Add foxtel to this and the ratings are miles ahead.

I would say one of the differences is that the AFL were under-represented in the ratings last year due to inadequate regional sampling in AFL regions. Now the foxtel ratings are national so we are getting a more realistic view of the national interest.

The foxtel ratings are a national rating not a metro only rating. The semi you are talking about rated 1.1 million. May have been outrated twice on friday night this year. Both were good games, while semi you are talking about was very one sided.

I compared qualifying finals and semi finals on Friday to Friday nights this year. On average the Friday nights this year are for Metro only down about 180K. Average for Friday night this year 957K metro only. The Qualifying and semi final on fridays if thats what you are talking about had an average of about 1.125 million. Like I said above maybe only 2 rounds got above 1.1 million on friday night this year. If you want to compare all of the qualifying and semi finals which were played on saturday and sunday as well (so not the same sized audience as Friday night) then the qualifying and semi finals from last year average a bit over 1 million viewers metro. This is a little above the friday night average of this year which is about 950K. You could say that this year's Friday night games being 50K down on last years semi and qualifying finals is similar. They certainly are not bigger. It doesn't suprise me that a good Friday night game that is live rated as well as a saturday or sunday final (which I cant remember if it was live or not).

When i made reference to last years quarter-semi finals I was talking about all. As they were live and none overlapped, I appolologise if you did not get my meaning. They averaged 1000. This years friday nights average was slighy more , though I had'nt reduced Pay TV for regionals.

I would say the national foxtel ratings are finally giving a true indication of the AFLs national audience, where as in previous years the poor regional coverage in regional NSW and Qld, plus the poorly sampled areas of regional vic, SA, WA resulted in similar ratings figures to this years Friday night games.

You might say that but I would'nt. The AFL doesn't like to admit the NRL avalanche exist for obvious resaons - The home supporters of Newcastle, Woolongong, Canberra. G Coast and Rockhampton are all ignored by the Metro Markets. Is it any wonder there such a large gap between the two codes in subsciption TV.

NZ home audience gets ignored by everybody.
