Why don't Sydneysiders like Rugby League State of Origin?

Post by Beaussie »

Thought the following quote from piesman2011 in another thread was very telling.
piesman2011 wrote:
For me the number of Sydney people watching needs to be more 1.1 million (population close to 5 million) compared to brisbane 900 K (population 2.1 million).
State of Origin RL is played in Melbourne because in Sydney it struggles to attract a crowd. Look at the tv numbers and Sydney population for further proof.

I must confess, I tried to watch the SoO but only lasted 15mins before watching a doco on SBS. Also seemed like from what I saw that there was no atmosphere generated by the crowd at Etihad Stadium. Like many other Sydneysiders, RL just ain't that interesting (in recent weeks described by coaches, players and commentators as "boring") despite all the ridiculous hype about state vs state...mate vs mate pushed by the owners of the NRL... News Ltd and friends.

Meanwhile as even old Roy points out.
the 1996 grand final between the Swans and North Melbourne, attracted 1.018m viewers in Sydney

GL trying to beat this,

i predict Origin 2 will be massive in Sydney, we are starting to get really desperate and the more desperate we get the more people around Aus will want to see us break this drought. Vics and QLD's no doubt will be watching so they can see us loose.

Origin 2 ratings 4.1M
Origin 3 if series still alive 4.3M

if Qld win game two the last game will struggle.

RL SOO is more about NSW v QLD than RL.

What?

If this many people liked RL they would attend in better numbers and watch even the NRL GF in similar numbers. The fact SOO outrates the NRL GF shows that it appeals to people of both states because of the rivalry, not the sport.

Oh you're bitter alright, and in denial.

RL on its biggest stage is loved by more Australian families than marngrook. Them's the facts.

No, SOO is watched by more Australians on TV than ARs, this year anyway. But watching TV doesn't equal love, it equals a level of interest ranging from slight to a lot.

If more Australians loved RL it would rate better than ARs for all games. Yet it doesn't does it? AFL gets more ratings per week by quite some margin [-X

If more Australians loved RL it would get better attendance than ARs. This couldn't be further from the truth!

If more Australians loved RL it would lead the memberships race. Yet the AFL is over 300% ahead!

So no, ARs is the most loved. SOO may be the most watched, but that's because SOO is a state v state rivalry and is shown in prime time.

No, SOO is shown in prime time. Therefore more casual viewers are available to watch it. If they loved RL they would turn up to games and watch consistently. The viewers watching SOO are interested in the interstate rivalry, not RL, otherwise these ratings wouldn't be one-offs.

Nope I'm sorry your lil piffy hypothetical argument just aint gunna do it. Alls we're presenting is the cold hard facts and you know what they tell us?

RL on its biggest stage is loved by more Australian families than marngrook.

You're not coping well with this Xman so I suggest you leave this thread, there's simply nothing you can say which will change the raw facts. Chin up though matey, the AFL is pretty good with memberships and crowds, its just that the AFL comp cant compete on the biggest stage, thats all.

How do you fit 3.91m people into a stadium designed for 60k,80k or even 100k? the ability of the AFL crew to try and put a negative spin on something which the rest of the country sees as an overwhelmingly positive is truly remarkable.

Your logic is as stupid as you are! #-o

If watching tv means you love something then a heck of a lot of people love cooking, singing, the news etc etc. on occasion I watch the F1, but do I love motor racing? Hardly. I even watch the Melbourne cup once and a while. But in all honesty I find horse racing very boring and only watch it to see who wins the biggest race in Australia.

So, just because a big audience watches SOO does mean they all love RL. It doesn't mean they even like it. It means they are interested in which state wins the contest. If they were all RL lovers then the NRL GF would get similar ratings.

So the AFL "well reasoned" theory is that three times a year, every year, nearly 4 million people who have no specific interest in rugby league decide to watch SOO. Interesting very interesting Mr freud.
