Re: Fight Club - Football TV Ratings Thread
The AFL may win because they because more games on TV not because the individual games will rate higher. Over the previous 5 years the NRL went from behind the AFL to in front and there was not a single game more or less of either code in that period.
When the NRL moves to more games on both Pay and FTA next year the normal service will be resumed. Of course the AFL has not yet won this season. Take five minutes look at the NRL ratings on this site and then multiply by 66% to get a better idea of what is really happening.

Going on last years figures the NRL average 1.2m regional ratings per weekend. The AFL average 800k regionals which is probably more now since this years ratings have increased substantially.
The largest single ratings of an AFL game this year was over 1.7m for ANZAC day, which was averaged over 4 hours, double an NRL game. The NRL haven't even come close to that.

Re: Fight Club - Football TV Ratings Thread
The AFL has never had a regular live game before this year. If the friday night game was live and exclusive to FTA then the Friday games would have an average rating of over 1 million viewers metro only this year. The regional viewers would also be bigger. The only reason the NRL rated 10 million more then the AFL last year was due to 3 SOO games. The NRL also had a total of 10 more matches compared to the AFL. On average more people watched regular AFL games. No doubt the NRL is a good TV product. Every game can be watched on TV mostly live. But in the end it is by having more games that the NRL has won the accumulative ratings over the last few years. I expect the NRL to do very well with the next TV deal. I also expect them to win accumulated ratings if not next year then at least when they get two new teams into the competition. However when there is only one AFL match to watch on FTA TV I expect more people will be watching that one match, then a similar NRL match. The only reason that the NRL is close to the AFL on friday nights is because they have a sports broadcast (two matches shown to two different audiences).

I wouldnt think a 37% increase on viewers each round round would be that hard, when you have a much larger percentage of your matches live this year, 5 extra PTV matches and two additional games.

Yep exactly, i have the NRL ratings on FTA and FOX in 2012 up aproxx 6.5% and the ratings in NZ are up close to 30% this year.enarelle wrote:The AFL may win because they because more games on TV not because the individual games will rate higher. 134million viewers last year + 12million viewers in NZ last year. Now just increase 134m by 6.5% and 12Million by 30% and you come to 160million+ for 2012 and that is with no extra coverage.
The AFL will be over 160 also this year with double the coverage from last year, but the kicker is when the NRL get all 8 games on Fox and 4 live FTA games and the extra game in 2015 then it will be all over red rover. :D

The cummulative count is BS and always will be because it doesnt take into account the 50% longer game time of the AFL, or the fact the AFL have most of their games shown at the same time. For example: the AFL's ANZAC day game rated 1.7M over a longer broadcast of 4 hours. If the NRL had two games shown within this time, which rated only 900k nationally each, they would add up to 1.8M. The cummulative ratings would suggest this is a win for the NRL but clearly the AFL was far far more popular accross Australia, and of far greater value to the TV network.
The fact is TV ratings in sport are interesting for two reasons:
1. They demonstrate which code is more popular on TV. This is clearly the AFL. Simply, they have the highest audience for home and away games. Examples include this years ANZAC day game which achieved over 1.7 million viewers averaged over 4 hours. Even last Friday night achieved 1.5M viewers for a single game, a figure the NRL just cannot beat even by including 2 games and targetting an entire city with their single team. The AFL also have the higher audience for special event games like the AFL GF, which beats the NRL GF every year.
2. They indicate the value each code has for the TV networks. The AFL have also lead in this area for many years. Even most NRL fanboys believe this will still be the case after the NRL's latest result is announced.

Re: Fight Club - Football TV Ratings Thread
The longer game length of AFL does not bring extra viewers to the game. The ratings is a debate about how many viewers not how long they watched. If the length of the game was the issue then cricket is number one.
I understand though why the AFL crew always want to talk about the club game results. They dont have anything else.
The highest rated game on FTA was SOO. The highest rated game on Pay TV was any one of a number of NRL games. Some things dont change.

Re: Fight Club - Football TV Ratings Thread
I never said a longer game brings more viewers. But it does mean an averaged audience over a longer time period which is further away from the peak audience, where as a shorter game is closer to the peak audience. The longer game means games need to be shown simultaneously. They make the cummulative ratings just plain rubbish as my example about the ANZAC day game showed.enarelle wrote:The longer game length of AFL does not bring extra viewers to the game. The SOO occasionally gets more ratings than the AFL GF, but so it should. It's live in prime time. If the AFL GF was at 7.30pm, when most people are home, it would rate significantly more.

the AFL get 115-125million from advertising, NRL get about 100million.enarelle wrote:The longer game length of AFL does not bring extra viewers to the game. The ratings is a debate about how many viewers not how long they watched. If the length of the game was the issue then cricket is number one.

The length of the game is irelavent when you look at these numbers, the NRL are doubling there advertising next year. The NRL are going to make the networks close to 150million in advertising next year, the Seven network are going to feel ripped off and we already here them mumbling about how they cant recoup the money paid to the AFL.

The AFL can show all the adds they want but it all comes down to quality not quantity.
Your correct cricket would be king if the game time was relavent, Xman just loves to suck up all the AFL propaganda.

The Nrl Dont need to introduce there adds greatly - Take on a fourth FTA game and there's no differece.
What needs to happen, Whoever the FTA broadcasters are next year , should do a deal with Fox to carry some of there adds.
