This AFL competition will be millions ahead on a cumulative count at the end of the year. Yes the scheduling is more complicated than the nRL, but that's what happens when yu have a competition involving games in every Australian state. Meanwhile the nRLs scheduling is very simple with almost all games in 2 states.pussycat wrote:We dont assume that at all ! No doubt it will be, but is that an achievment? with almost double the tv coverage we have.

http://www.theroar.com.au/2012/05/16/nr ... r-fairfax/What was then interesting about the Fairfax article was the difference between AFL and NRL advertising revenue. In 2011, the AFL managed between $115 to $125 million, while the NRL was closer to $100 million.
I found that to be the most revealing part of both articles. Here is my take on things.
The AFL achieved those figures ($115-$125 million) with four free to air games per week with consistent nationwide coverage. The NRL figures (near $100 million) were achieved with three free to air games per week

The AFL will win this years ratings by a mile with only 5-6 games shown in isolation per weekend. The nRL have 7-8 isolated games per weekend and will be a mile behind.pussycat wrote:No doubt it will be, but is that an achievment? with almost double the tv coverage we have.

With over 50% more coverage for the AFL this year, a 20% increase is to be expected and certainly nothing to brag about.pussycat wrote:No doubt it will be, but is that an achievment? with almost double the tv coverage we have.

The AFL have 1 more game per round (11%) this year but ratings are up 37%! =D> =D> =D> =D>
The AFL still have less games played in isolation compared to the nRL this year but will win the ratings war by a massive margin.
I suppose this goes hand in hand with the massive lead they have in crowds, members and revenue.

So with 134 million viewers in 2011 (%6 up in 2012) + 12 million viewers on Nz Fox (30%up in 2012) = 146million viewers in 2011. We can safely say that this year the NRL will have over 160 million viewers watching our game. =D> =D>eelofwest wrote:With over 50% more coverage for the AFL this year, a 20% increase is to be expected and certainly nothing to brag about.pussycat wrote:No doubt it will be, but is that an achievment? with almost double the tv coverage we have.

Re: Fight Club - Football TV Ratings Thread
This interesting thing about the 115-125 million for AFL compared to 100 million NRL is that this is the amount of revenue generated during a certain time slot. My question is how much would that time slot normally generate. Are the 3 SOO games generating 20 million a year, however normal programing may well generate 15 million. So in essence an increase of 5 million for 3 SOO games compared to 3 AFL saturday afternoon games that may generate 2 million dollars of revenue increase over normal programing. In 2011 AFL's friday night game had good ratings from 8.30-12.00, while the NRL games had good ratings in the more family friendly time slot of 7.30-11.30. Could it be that the AFL time slot may have made less money through revenue, but still be worth more money because it held ratings late at night when normally not many viewers watch TV.pussycat wrote:No doubt it will be, but is that an achievment? with almost double the tv coverage we have.

So in the end its not about how much revenue the program is generation for the network, it is how much extra revenue the sports can generate over normal cheaper programing.
Even with the figures you have provided at most the 3 NRL games are worth 500 million dollars over 5 year minus the cost of production. So what do you think 350 million for 3 FTA TV games. That would cover the cost of productions and might make C9 a bit of money. What if they were simulcast games? 250 million for 3 FTA simulcast games?

Re: Fight Club - Football TV Ratings Thread
I dont know the answer to the Friday Night timeslot query, but I did read an article on Wikipedia, saying that advertisers prefer there advertisements to go to different audiences, and not just be preaching to the same viewers. So I would take that to be a positive for 2 matches on a Friday night reaching fans from 4 different clubs instead of two.

I like your point about the advertisers trying to advertise to different viewers. This is essentially the audience reach, which I believe is usually higher for AFL matches, am I incorrect? Also with the NRL having 8 matches on at different times this would mean that advertisers are readvertising to the same viewers up to 8 times. AFL viewers can't watch as many games due to games being played at the same time. Does this mean that smaller AFL TV audiences are worth as much or more then larger NRL audiences? Due to more repeat viewing by NRL audiences.

I would'nt think so, All clubs are reprented on TV, and while The AFL do seem to have some very high rating club games - , the NRL do average almost 300 PTV viewers fairly consistantly. I think the consistency of the NRL competition is there strong point . Also they have wide reaching rep football.

Re: Fight Club - Football TV Ratings Thread
Another week, another massive win for the AFL! This time a more comparable single game live to each market, except Perth which still get the AFL on a significant delay.
Fri TV: #NRL #NRLWSTWAR (Nine+GEM) 602k (Syd 368k Mel 16k Bri 212k Ade 2k Per 4k)
Fri TV: #AFL FTA #aflpiescats (Seven+7mate) 875k (Syd 22k Mel 522k Bri 44k Ade 150k Per 137k)
With foxtel the AFLs lead will be a massive 550-600k without regional FTA ratings. =D> even after these are included the lead should be 300-400k.
Look at live prime time NRL in Perth! 4k!
quick, get a team in there ASAP!

Nationally I would say for this friday night the AFL would be rating about 1.5 million not a bad result. That would be the case if the foxtel numbers are about 300K (hopefully they are more).

I agree that the NRL ratings are fairly consistant compared to the AFL ratings which are more up and down. Wouldn't the NRL ratings by being consisant suggest that the same viewers are watching multiple NRL games. This might also suggest that the same viewers are watching every week end as well. Again I could be wrong, but that would be logical in my opinion.
