compareing the popularity between football(and the a-league) to the AFL with ratings/memberships and crowds is hard.
Firstly my main arguement was fottball is more popular than AFL in sydney and the western sydney a-league team has generated more interest and will sit higher in the pecking order compared to the two AFL teams. football is followed on two/ three main fronts in sydney and specially sydneys west, English premier league, the socceroos and the a-league. atm western sydney does not have an a-league team and also makes it hard to properly compare but here i go....

being a fully fledged professional league on both free to air and pay tv, compareing AFL to a-league is unfair, AFL hands down is bigger but looking at viewing

This year the swans have had 82,000 then 32,000 then 46,000 then 50,000. GWS this year have averaged 82,000 then 26,000 then 34,000 then 26,000

The HAL averages around 65-80k nartionally and around 30K in Sydney, now that those figures are for the least watched of the three, do i need to add the premier league amounts or the socceroos?....

Participation numbers, lol not worth even going there... How many AFL stars are from NSW compared to footballing stars?!
how many AFL players would be reconised in sydney compared to football stars?? umm....

The average sydneysider and even more west sydneysiders has a much greater connection to football than AFL. Sydney, Western sydney majorally, wollongong majorally and the hunter majorally have very large football communities and football has been a part of the major cities of NSW for many many years. No other sport connects to all the nationalitities like football does.... etc etc....

well what about the 6500 at the last gws game?... i can not think of a time when Sydney FC were ever that low so no AFL does not beat a-league in all ur indicators. when the new western a-league team comes it will make gws look very bad.

AFL is underneath League and Union and football here. in western sydney Daylight on Europa separates Football above AFL and Rugby League is somewhere outside the solar system way out in front of all...

i live here in sydney, in western sydney, and i can say football, union and league rain supreme over AFL here because thats how it is here, you can only give your opinion thats solely on trying to protect your precious AFL's pride.

The western sydney A-league team will sit perched above the two AFL teams of sydney. Already the excitment in western sydney for this new team is more than what i ever noticed GWS muster up... football is more popular than AFL in sydney & NSW, its just a fact, try to stay humble in ur place AFL.

Oh dear, you're serious too aren't you. My god, have you see the A-League tv ratings and crowds in Sydney. Woeful comes to mind. And what ever happened to the West Sydney Rovers for the A-League. Disaster written all over it.

GWS fans tried to take credit for the inflated 38,000 crowd that turned out for the opening game as 'proof of success' and that League is dead lol but really a large percentage of that crowd were interstate AFL supportes, swans supporters and just those sydneysiders who were caught in the excitment of the new 'thing'. Now you guys want to make excuses for the bad crowds in blacktown (Councils fault) and try to swing the negative attention towards the so called smallest 'football code' of the top 4. But the GWS supporters have put their foot in it again trying to belittle football and sydney FC. the so called minnows of sydneys and west sydneys sporting landscape (according to some victorian experts) will always be bigger than gws, the swans the AFL up here because footballs heartland is western sydney, 90% of peoples second fav sport is football...

Now as far as soccer goes in Western Sydney - oh sure at the grass roots it's doing okay. But translating it to elite level is already failing! Why? Because on TV even NRL is beating it, and the AFL is thrashing it! In crowd numbers it's even more pronounced! The A League is a joke because none of the grass roots supporters like those at Wentworthville are interested. They stick with what they know and won't support the A League. That says rather a lot don't you think?
