yeah your right about round 3 I messed that one up.

I would say a closer apples V apples comparison would be Melbourne V SYdney because their populations are similar. With NSW V VIC 7.2 million compared to 5.5 million people the NSW population 30% larger then the VIC popluation. I still think that the national total would be better but I can only estimate the AFL ratings nationally. With my stats I didnt use the delayed QLd game I used that broadcast game or the higher rating game for Qld with the other games (best ratings for both Brisbane and Sydney). In reality there isn't to much difference when the games are apples V apples. It will be interesting to see now RL goes with more live FTA games, better advertising into Vic, SA and WA on their next broadcast deal along with hopefully 2 new teams in 2015 (WA and Brisbane would be the ones I would pick)

The AFL has 198 matches + 10 finals matches for a total of 208. 207 of these matches will be shown live on PTV. Around 105 of these will be shown on FTA, about 75 live.

Rugby League has 193 matches + 10 finals + around 8 Representive Matches for a total of 211. 125 of these matches will be on PTV, about 112 will be live. around 90 matches will be on FTA, about 35 live.
And of these 207 AFL matches only about 50 will be shown in isolation, therefore only about 130 games will be available for viewers to watch because the audiences are split between two or more matches shown simultaneously.

Of the NRLs 211 games just about every single game is shown in isolation.

Therefore the entire NRL audience can watch 211 games and the AFL audience only about 130 games.
So Xman you admit that NRL will out rate AFL by a fair margin next year?
If the NRL get a similar tv rights arrangment next year they could very well win a cumulative ratings comparison purely because more NRL games can be shown in isolation than NRL games. But cumulative ratings are not the entire story when the broadcasts are different lengths.

For example the AFL rated over 1.7m nationally for 4 hours on ANZAC day. Yet because NRL games are telecast over only two hours they can show two games that rate only 900k nationally, and when these ratings are 'accumulated' they add up to 1.8m.

So despite the fact the cummulative audience shows the NRL won that afternoons ratings the AFL averaged 1.7m over 4 hours and the NRL only 900k.

This is a prime example why the NRLs victory in the cummulative ratings is just plain meaningless.

We all know the NRL can never rate near 1.7m for home and away matches. The AFL has a bigger, more national audience.

Theres some 7mate figures from Friday and Saturday missing, but cumulative AFL viewing across fox and metro fta totalled in at 4,736,000 million. (up from 3,908,000 in 2011, and the record 3,927,000 in 2008 as far as I can tell).

When 7mate figures are added in this should be the first home and away round ever to have TWO games go through the million viewer mark. 7 mate figures would add around 100-150k going by current averages in Sydney and Brisbane, which would see the total come close to 4.9 million

So you are admitting to the fact if NRL get coverage similar to AFL next Tv deal that it will outrate AFL, Thankyou that's all i wanted to know :D :D

Im from newcastle, and would assume raider dave is from Canberra. We put our pants on just the same as the people in the City fork do. I can tell you from experience, In General, fan from the bush are far more passionate about the the game than people in the cities.
Pussycat I'll type this slowly so you understand the point I was trying to make.As I said national TV audiences are close so why does a team like collingwood turn over 3x as much as any NRL team.It cant be popularity as youve stated many times as many watch league as they do AFL.So why the big difference in finances.Could it be that Its supporters part with more money or that their fairy godmother pops down once a year and just puts it in their bank account.Im not saying regional league fans aren,t passionate of course they are.But when it comes to being cash cows I would say urbanites with access to the clubs they support are much more likely to fork over the green than someone in the sticks who has no hope of seeing their team most weeks.I dont doubt the passion for league in the bush its those in sydney and on the gold coast whose passion must be questioned.Membership, crowd and merchandise numbers demand that.

This whole argument was about which code rates the best. It's good that you have finally seen the light and are ready to admit that the NRL do.

In which way do they? They are certainly not the most watched sport for individual games. The AFL almost always have the most watched game each year in the AFL GF, despite not being shown in prime time like SOO.

The AFL certainly have the best ratings for home and away games as can be seen by this years ANZAC day ratings of over 1.7m viewers. This number eclipses any home and away NRL game by a massive margin!

The AFL have the biggest TV rights deal, and despite the upbeat attitude of RL fans for their coming deal, are still likely to be ahead next year. Why? Because overall AFL rates better.

Estimations of the total return rugby league will get from its next media deal have been as high as $1.2 billion, but there is a growing sentiment from bidders that the final figure will not be that lucrative despite a Federal Court appeal panel ruling last week protecting the ARLC's right to sell living streaming.
The initial Nine and Fox Sports bids this week are not expected to reach the $1 billion mark, with bidders increasingly mindful of over-spending in a tough climate.
Ten, the third-ranked broadcaster, confirmed a 70.1 per cent dip in half-year profit last month, and at Seven West Media a profit downgrade last week has been followed by reports of a 10 per cent cut in costs in the Seven Network newsroom.
There is also a growing perception that the successful bidders for the AFL rights deal, Seven, Foxtel and Telstra, overpaid in dishing out $1.25 billion over five years for that broadcast agreement.

Honestly, this one's scraping the bottom of the barrel but I'm actually hoping 9 & Fox put in pissweak opening bids.

I dare say they would have been buoyed by recent poor results for ch10 and ch7. they may get it for a song!

What is also worrrying for the NRL is that foxtel are rumoured to have come down hard on any suggestion of a reduction in their current exclusive arrangment. :-k so more FTA games may mean less foxtel payment.

All up these are worrying signs for the NRL.

Hahaha, nice observation there Xman.

So Doc, welcome, please however don't pretend here like you do over at LU that you have inside knowledge of the tv negotiations. Like the rest of us, you just form your opinions and I stress your opinions on what is reported in the media.

Today's reports don't look good for the NRL I trust you'll agree.
