Ahh just gotta pull you up here Xman. In another thread you said the suns will be decent in 2 years and GWS in 3 years. While i think the above quote is more accurate I think you are still off the mark a bit. Especially with GWS. They're 7 or more years away from making the top 10.

In future provide consistency with your comments Xman, if you can.

37 games down and the AFL crowd average is now above last years average at about 37000. Suprising what 1 extra game can do. As for the averages going down, this is how it works if you introduce 2 new teams whos stadia capacity is about 12000 less (metricon and skooda when it it finished) then the AFL average crowd, then the average crowd will go down. If the NRL added two new teams with with two new stadia with a max capacity of 10,000 then their crowd average would go down as well. On top of this two clubs are playing 6 or more games in tasmania (not sure exact numbers) in small stadia and with more games in Canberra as well. The AFL would average close to 50,000 a game with bigger stadia in Perth, Adelaide and two MCG sized grounds in Melbourne, however crowd sizes are limited by the small sizes of the grounds. This would be true for NRL as well to some extent.
yes .. how bout we wait for the rest of the round .. as the average will be down considerably on 2011 after the next 8 games
the reason the VFL average is going down .. is because the game is on the nose in NSW & QLD ( 4 teams )
it is near irrelevant & becoming less so each year
maybe starting up 2 more teams in states already disinterested in the sport was a bad idea ?
just saying is all

Yes you're right on the mark with additional nsw and qld teams RD. I've said Darwin all along. It was a terribly bad idea and millions upon millions have been squandered on this misadventure by the AFL. If they had have put half the money they put into GWS or the GC into a side in Darwin or Tasmania they would have a fairly stable team with a stable supporter and player recruitment base. Instead you have GWS paying for cheersquad members to travel, Karmichael Hunt with millions laughing all the way to the bank on the GC, both teams performing miserably and lowering the level of competition in the AFL, no local players for easy recruiting and poor crowd attendances the norm for these sides. What a silly silly organisation the AFL is shaping up as of late. [-X

3 of the 4 teams are easy beats. Wait til they start winning!

Funny that the Lions and Suns are still averaging more fans than the Storm who are unbeatable!

What are you on about Xmouse? Average attendances are plummeting becuase these teams are sitting smack bang in the centre of RL heartland. A foolish move which the AFL did not think through properly and are slowly coming to realise. They could have positioned GWs much better but instead set em up for failure. The GC is a shambles with one of their worst players being paid the most. All over the shop and the AFL just didnt have the knowhow to pull it off. They should've gone Darwin or Tassie where the local pop would have supported and welcomed their new team. Instead sydney and qld fans are leaving in droves.

Crowds always plummet as a result of on-field performance. This is even more pronounced for expansion markets.

Are you denying this? :? Or are you suggesting the Gold Coast and Townsville are RL expansion failures?

3 reasons the swans have dropped:

1. increased crowds usually are a season or so behind onfield performances.

2. the SCG renovations will hit walkup and general attendance. Note the Swans membership is essentially the same

3. They will have obviously lost a few fans to the GWS.

I'm not denying crowds drop during onfield performance xmouse, I'm stating the AFL made a very foolish move which has affected crowds negatively. GWS for example. 38k home game 1. 6k Home game 2. Now that's a plummit and its not because of their performance, ill tell you that right now. The 38k rocked up for the swans and the novelty factor. No the plummit is because the AFL didnt do their homework.

4 rounds down is a bit early to say that GWS has failed or that they wont work in the long term. As for the Suns I expect them to do ok with a self managed stadium which means they can make a nice profit on crowds of 15-20 K and good sponsorship.

Yes one would think four rounds in is too early but if we look at the way GWS has been setup. Positioned betwixt and between in homebush 15 km from the swans and an area which any sydneysider would realise is not Greater Western Sydney heartland. Then we have their player base, a bunch of teenagers, the vast majority plucked from other states. They will no doubt cop thrashings week in week out for years to come and when they actually begin to improve the lure to return to their homelands will be great, as Eddie Macguire has suggested. A shocking way to expand in Sydney and the AFL hasnt realised it. Perhaps you're right with the GC piesman but crowds and performance so far this season suggest the plummet will continue up there also...

I wouldve put GWS at blacktown, a place which is definitive of Greater Western Sydney, and built a decent stadium out there. Also would've made sure they didnt have a team full of children playing against men. Not too difficult eh?

But first and foremost i wouldve put a team in darwin.
