The combatants aren’t describing it that way, but that’s what it is.

The opening shots have been fired in the battle between Australia’s top two winter codes, Australian Rules and rugby league, for the hearts, minds and pockets of the two million-plus people who make greater western Sydney the nation’s third biggest marketplace behind Sydney and Melbourne.

Two publicity cannonades in Sydney this week set the stage.

Rugby league launched ticket sales on Wednesday for its lone Sydney State of Origin match in June, just as the AFL was preparing for Thursday’s first-ever season launch outside Melbourne.

League suddenly has an ambassador for western Sydney in the form of Parramatta captain Nathan Hindmarsh.

Hindmarsh’s team hosts Penrith in a western Sydney derby on Friday, the night before the AFL’s opening match.

Penrith will host another innovation on April 21, an under-20s version of the hugely successful State of Origin brand.

The NRL also has a blockbuster lined up in direct opposition to Saturday night’s AFL match, with St George Illawarra hosting premiers Manly.

THE Greater Western Sydney Giants orange and charcoal army look set to outnumber Sydney Swans fans in the blockbuster opener on Saturday night.

More than 28,000 tickets for the clash had been sold as of Monday, and an ANZ Stadium spokesman said they were expecting more than 40,000 at the game.

Giants fans have taken up 56 per cent of tickets compared with 44 per cent of the Swans faithful. The Giants have more than 7500 members signed up, a third of whom are from western Sydney

You epitomize the very reason the NRL get such disgraceful crowds! You think a crowd of 13k between two Sydney NRL teams is acceptable!

this game was built up as a call to arms for RL in western Sydney. Instead it embarrassed them, especially when compared to the 38k that showed up to watch an expected one sided AFL game at ANZ last night.

Dream on Dave! The highest ever debut crowd was 44k, and that was in AFL heartland. The suns v lions game got less last year.

This was a great success for the AFL and the crowd looked at least 30-40% giants fans!
