A lot of folks from western sydney spend 3hrs a day/5 days a week travelling from home towards the CBD - where many work - and back, crawling along major arterials or sitting (or standing) on public transport squashed into those steel train/bus cans like sardines. they do this in order to earn some coin. That wretched experience turns many folks off venturing out of their own districts on days off unless it is absolutely necessary, and attending sport in Sydney is not a necessity nor is it a culture that is embraced up here.

You might argue that many fans of Melbourne clubs will travel out of their districts to watch their team play, but the geography and transport of Melbourne is different to Sydney. The CBD and location of the stadia there is practically in the centre Melbourne's metro area, and the CBD is really the only main centre. The grounds are also accessed easily via public transport. In contrast, Sydney is very much a collection of communities with their own major centres, such as Parramatta (is practically a 2nd CBD now), Penrith (far west), Hurstville (south), Chatswood (north), Bondi Junction (east), etc.

It's easy to criticise Sydney-siders for our apathy when it comes to attending weekly sport in numbers, but at the same time, it's not readily comparable to Melbourne. Just recently, a rugby league club executive advocated for all of Sydney's rugby league clubs to play their home matches out of Olympic Park (centre of the metro area) & Moore Park (near the CBD) saying it will boost crowds. The majority of supporters are against this because up here, most of the fans of rugby league teams actually live in their club's district. A Penrith supporter wants to watch his team in Penrith, likewise a Cronulla supporter doesn't want to venture out of the shire on the weekend, and Manly supporter doesn't want to leave the Northern Beaches on their days off to watch their team. Indeed, when these teams are playing an away game within the Sydney and 20km from their district, their supporters will not travel.

Hmm, small hole in his excuse: Swans supporters seem happy to battle the sydney traffic. Plus, if traveling to sporting events is so easy in Melbourne why do the all conquering storm struggle to get over 10k?
