It would have done plenty, if there was money in the A-League to pay for the best players (which both the AFL and the NRL have, with the AFL having more). Not to mention that Australian TV viewers are fed a constant stream of English soccer and have done for years.
But the money isn't there, resulting in poor retention of juniors who play soccer.
Which is the stronger heartland?

Re: Which is the stronger heartland?
No, playing strength has PLENTY to do with success at the elite level. Soccer isn't strong because they pay peanuts compared to the AFL and the NRL. And they pay peanuts because the networks know soccer doesn't rate or pull good crowds.
AFL and NRL don't have that excuse. But the NRL treats it's grass roots with contempt, making it more difficult to get the best to play. No such issue for the AFL. So if you lot want to make a go of expanding into Perth and Adelaide you need more grass roots RL!

you just said its money
now your saying they pay peanuts beacuse no one watches it on TV
ah..... what did I say
your best product is good .. the rest wil take care of itself
the NRL has ZERO reponsibility to te grass roots of our game
never has
learn something before you brandy such terms around ............ the ARL, the NSWRL .. the CRL .. the QRL run our game below the NRL
all of this
to change when the IC is formed in about a week I understand
the streamlining of our games infrastructure will follow ... with a massive cash injection from 2013
as I've said about 5 times now
they'll be no stopping RL ...........

Re: Which is the stronger heartland?
They pay peanuts because no one watches it on TV AND don't go to A-League matches. Even NRL crowds are bigger on average than the A-League.
The NRL should take responsibility for the grass roots. It's the key to expansion. They need more competitions to reflect better the game's support and increase the strength of support where it is needed, and that's at the games. TV will ultimately kill the NRL because too many people are sitting at home and watching it when they should either be at the game, or playing it.
The best product is AFL. The crowd numbers reflect this. The TV ratings in the metropolitan areas back this up. There are no regional ratings that are accurate.
RL is in trouble, and the sooner you expand your grass roots the better.

understand how our game is set up... its history .. before commenting on who should be doing what
the AFL have ruined their brand .. their product
it was seriously awful in 2011 .. too many weak n uncompetitive sides ... blow out scores .. & its going to get worse in 2012 .. with another team sucking even more talent out of sides already struggling & draft preferences kept for these new teams .. that are the worst of the worst anyway
& guess what
The crowd numbers reflect this , they're falling . The TV ratings in the metropolitan areas back this up.... as they're falling too
don't worry about regionals .. they'd of been down too
it stunk up the joint in 2011..... its going to be ranker then a 3 week old wombat turd in a bucket in 2012
its old .. its tired .. its out.
the NRL is clearly the best product in Australian sport .. close .. competitive .. of the highest quality ... its hip & cool , its in.
136 Million aussies say as much
& its getting bigger ... richer .... & stronger
for the ... 6th time .. it will be un stoppable in the coming decades
