Official List of Excuses for Low RL Crowds
Re: Official List of Excuses for Low RL Crowds
Well the Swans have been in Sydney for nearly 30 years and the Storm in Melbourne for somewhat less. The Swans are trying to stop an ongoing slide in crowds and members. They get very poor TV ratings even though all games are live in Sydney. They peaked 5 years ago.

they peaked 5 years ago during a premiership era. Go figure!enarelle wrote:Well the Swans have been in Sydney for nearly 30 years and the Storm in Melbourne for somewhat less. They have had stead figures for many years ago. These figures as mentioned are the highest of any club in Sydney.
Their FTA TV ratings are negatively effected by simultaneous foxtel broadcasts.

The Storm are one of the smallest clubs in Melbourne with the least Members and attendances

The swans in 1995 had played in finals only twice in the previous 20 years. They hadnt won a premiership for 50 odd years. They had little to no TV coverage on FTA or PayTV (at least the storm get payTV).
The storm have played in the finals 11 of 14 years. In the GF 5 times and premiers 3 times.
Nice comparison.

they have been the Swans for years. They used to be the South Melbourne Swans. They played at the Lake oval next to the Albert Park Lake, hence the name swans.
They were a basket case of a club playing in few finals games for decades.
Comparing them in 1995 to the Storm in 2011, as far as on and off field performance, is ridiculous.

Gee it's getting worse all the time.
RD now believes he knows something about Australian Football
yet he doesn't know the difference between the name of club and it's mascot.
And WTF cares.

" Nicknamed the “Southerners”, the team were more colourfully known as the “Bloods", in reference to the bright red sash on their white jumpers[3][4] (the sash was replaced with the current red “V” in 1932).[5] The colorful epithet the “Bloodstained Angels” was also in use. The “Bloodstained Angels” epithet proved prophetic when South Melbourne played in the 1945 "Bloodbath" Grand Final against Carlton, a game legendary for its brutal violence which saw many of the Swans' players jumpers stained with their own or the opposition’s blood (from the book "The Blood Stained Angels", a history of the South Melbourne Football Club). The 1945 Grand Final saw 10 players reported and suspended for a total of 69 games.[6] The club was based at Lake Oval, also home of the South Melbourne Cricket Club. "

You dickwad. They are nicknamed the bloods because of their red sash! Nickname, not mascot name!
They are and have always been the swans. I remember watching them as a kid in the mid 70's and they were the swans!
You absolute goose!!

Re: Official List of Excuses for Low RL Crowds
What do you expect from a burp machine who failed to note that several Sunday games were playing in Sydney before South Melbourne even moved there, pulling 30,000 in 1979 for a game between North Melbourne and Hawthorn?
Rugby League has a lying culture. Altering crowd figures, relying on inaccurate TV figures from regional NSW and refusing to distance itself from Leagues Clubs and obtain it's own club memberships as it relies on LC's to survive as private entities.

Re: Official List of Excuses for Low RL Crowds
You are a complete tool!
The bloods was their nick name. The swans is their mascot.
Just like the Essendon Bombers are also called the Dons.
http://www.sydneyswans.com.au/history/t ... fault.aspx
"The Grand Final of 1945, together with the first Semi-Final in 1970 and Elimination final of 1977 were the only finals the Swans played during their remaining 45 years based at Albert Park – but they failed in all three of these crucial engagements. Of the 12 competing VFL clubs, the Swans finished in 8th place or better on only eight occasions over that 45 year period. These statistics, however, mask the magnificent achievements of the players of that period. The leanest years of the Swans also produced nine Brownlow Medals. The record of 13 medals (by 11 players) is the greatest number achieved by any club in the history of VFL/AFL football."
Is an official AFL site good enough?
