A-League Sydney Expansion "long way off"

Post by Beaussie »

Hahaha, the FFA were so caught up in their miserable failed world cup bid, they left the domestic A-League to flounder. Expansion is a long way off FFA. What a shambles.
New Sydney club 'long way off'

HOPES of a western Sydney side playing in the A-League in the next three to four years still remain forlorn, despite revelations that former Perth Glory owner Nick Tana has offered to help establish a team.

It was revealed yesterday that the Perth millionaire is keen to get involved in the A-League again after being out of the game since 2006, when he relinquished his ownership of Perth Glory, the club he and former partner Paul Afkos started in the National Soccer League in 1998.

However, sources told The Australian yesterday there was nothing concrete after Tana recently floated the idea with FFA, which is desperate to bring western Sydney into the competition before it loses more ground to the AFL, with Greater Western Sydney making its debut next season.

"We need to have a team in the heartland of our game and there is no doubt about that. But it is so far off at this stage it's not funny, " the source said.

"I understand Nick Tana made the first approach, but it is only an interest at this stage. That's all.

"It is a very tough market out there and this needs to be done properly. Western Sydney needs to be another Melbourne Victory, a club that is financially sound and has a great footing."

Those comments show that while western Sydney is fundamental to the future of the A-League, the head body is not about to fall into the trap of making the same mistake it did with the flawed and subsequently failed Sydney Rovers franchise.

FFA was left red-faced two years ago after allowing Rovers to jump the queue of bidders and handing it the licence to run a western Sydney franchise despite those behind the bid admitting they did not have the money.

It is truly amazing that they never received the memo from the failed World Cup bid that if a country this size doesn't have a strong national competition with money and sponsors behind it, FIFA will never be interested.
Rugby League has a lying culture. Altering crowd figures, relying on inaccurate TV figures from regional NSW and refusing to distance itself from Leagues Clubs and obtain it's own club memberships as it relies on LC's to survive as private entities.

The soccerphiles have pinned everything on the AL and used to say it was doing the job mainly because it got over the ethcentricity of the NSL. Apart from that issue the NSL was a much stronger setup. IMO the AL fails because it set up one team in each of Melbourne and Sydney leaving Melbourne to dominate the comp. Secondly it was a big call expecting all these new clubs to get off the ground and I don't know if ownership is a good thing long or short term. It doesn''t help that the Glory and now Adelaide are faltering. But the joke is that Tana is involved. He couldn't run Glory so could he be expected to be the savior of soccer in the WS ?
Nice try Cos.

Could be the sort of person who couldn't run a telephone exchange let alone a soccer club.

Soccer fans are as bad as Rugby League fans with their arrogance and way of thinking. The article in the OP had me laughing out loud though. Sucko Soccer.

BTW, massive crowd in Sydney for the A-League last night. Tad over 10k for the only Soccer team in Sydney and they think this city is ready for another team. Hilarious.

Now the burps are affecting areas outside of RL. This is even sadder.

GWS surely couldn't do any worse than the less than 10k average that is the norm in the NRL, hence the need for fudged figures.

In that report he also states that the Storm were going to reduce the number of free tickets - a similar issue.

Free tickets must be used in a certain way for it to work. I cite the Swans as an example of doing it right.

Oh dear, imagine the crowd averages for the Storm without free tickets. The A-League and Rugby Union are killing them in Victoria.
