Raiders, Brumbies in Canberra date clash
BY JON TUXWORTH

The Canberra Raiders round five home game against North Queensland scheduled for Saturday, March 31 will be moved to avoid a clash with Super Rugby’s ACT Brumbies.
The Brumbies also have a home game at Canberra Stadium set down for that date against South African heavyweights the Sharks.
The Raiders-Cowboys game will be shifted to either Sunday, April 1 or Monday, April 2.
Canberra cannot play on Friday in round five due to the short turnaround after playing Wests Tigers on Monday night at Campbelltown the week before.
A Raiders-Brumbies double header was never a possibility, given mitigating factors such as sponsorship branding, catering and gate takings.

ACT is Rugby Union Territory
Just goes to show which team/code dominates Canberra/ACT. Move aside Raiders you lightweights the Brumbies playing a South African team is bigger in the ACT.
Re: ACT is Rugby Union Territory
I thought the Brumbies were in just as much financial trouble as the Raiders? Unless things have improved for the Brumbies.
Rugby League has a lying culture. Altering crowd figures, relying on inaccurate TV figures from regional NSW and refusing to distance itself from Leagues Clubs and obtain it's own club memberships as it relies on LC's to survive as private entities.

the Brumbies are technically insolvent , having gone to the ACT GOvt 3 of the last 5 years for assistanceTopper wrote:I thought the Brumbies were in just as much financial trouble as the Raiders? Unless things have improved for the Brumbies.
they have no licensed club premises to extract any extra funds
the Raiders on the other hand own 10 licensed premises in NSW the ACT & QLD
also parcels of land & the facilities on them in the City & at Bruce near Canberra Stadium
thats why their short term inability to find a major sponsor is not a crisis
as the CEO of the Raiders Group Simon Hawkins said .... we're fine without a major sponsor , we have the reserves to cover our costs without one
but its easier with one.

Of course there is. It made the local media. The Raiders have been told to piss off as there is no way they or the NRL can compete with the Brumbies playing a team from South Africa.Raiderdave wrote:brumbies had their draw in firstBeaussie wrote:Just goes to show which team/code dominates Canberra/ACT. This means that even News Limited have no confidence in the game they own. If they did they would play the game at Manuka on the same day and claim that they would win the battle for the crowd.

Like the Suns vs the Titans on the Gold Coast, the Brumbies smash the Raiders on every measure there is in Canberra whether that be crowds, sponsorship, memberships, tv ratings and even the right to stadiums.

it made the media because people can't believe a media company like foxtel could overlook the fact the brumbies had a game already scheduled for the time & date they then .... then .. allocated to the Raiders
amateur stuff from Murdochs mob
seems their getting into bed with the AFL has afflicted them with some circus virus or something ....

The Raiders and News Limited won't take risks. This is why they are struggling along with every other NRL club.Beaussie wrote:Like the Suns vs the Titans on the Gold Coast, the Brumbies smash the Raiders on every measure there is in Canberra whether that be crowds, sponsorship, memberships, tv ratings and even the right to stadiums.

I know this is this the FC but really RD you should tone your assertions done to the barely believeble not outright joke level.Raiderdave wrote:which is more then can be said for about a dozen AFL clubs
Yes, there are always "struggling" AFL clubs because all teams cannot function equally especially as all teams have different circumstances. Some teams for example have to attract attendances over 30k to turn a profit because of stadia deals. That would bankrupt every nrl team overnight especially the ones that get paid to play at ANZ stadium. The big difference is that AFL teams aren't bankrupt. Any assistance they recieve is just return of money that the AFL has raised. The AFL pumps a lot of money into areas other than the member clubs as you would be well aware of. People continually bring up the subject of the Swans but they forget the Swans generated huge TV revenue by being the only VFL team playing on a Sunday. this went to the VFL and only a team proportion to the Swans. Likewise The GC and GWS are not the great drain on revenue that everybody makes them out to be. Most of the costs have been outlayed by now and the increased revenue by having an extra game per round is about to start to come in. Considering the good start by the GC you'd expect them to be paying their way in 2012.

I second that. A very good point often overlooked is the Swans generating huge tv revenue through games broadcast live around the country. Anything gained in tv viewers in Sydney/NSW is an added bonus. Good on ya cos789 for setting the record straight. =D>

Beaussie wants to talk about NRL clubs struggling
then he should worry first about numerous clubs in his sport travelling quite poorly before he starts throwing stones in glass houses about anyone elses
the Thuns & GWS will ... max the credit card out ... so to speak
they won't contribute to the war chest for a very very long time & I'd hate to see the bill for getting them up & sustaining them over the next 10 years .... its gunna be massive , & if I were the fan of a struggling AFL club in the heartland ... I'd be pretty angry about it
its their club that has helped build this war chest , & to see it pissed up against the w@ll to satisfy the AFL's rampant ego ... is a disgrace.
shame AFL
shame.....
