FORMER Wests Tigers prop Todd Payten is "highly embarrassed" after pleading guilty this morning to urinating on a war memorial hours after his club were booted out of the NRL finals.

The retired front-rower this morning pleaded guilty in the Downing Centre Local Court to a public act of indecency.

The court heard Payten urinated on the Hyde Park war memorial on September 18.

Wests Tigers had suffered a narrow 22-20 loss to the New Zealand Warriors at the Sydney Football Stadium just hours earlier, which resulted in them being eliminated from NRL premiership contention.

Payten announced last season that he would be unlikely to ever play again due to ongoing knee and ankle problems and said "this isn't the way I wanted it to finish. If I'm really honest with myself, I'd be hard-pressed to continue on the way it's going at the moment. I can't."

Magistrate Graeme Curran was told that Payten was so "highly embarrassed" by the circumstances of his actions that he didn't seek character references.

Magistrate Curran requested that those references be obtained, with the matter to be finalised later today.
