Re: NRL EXPANSION
Seems the NRL is really worried about the AFL in Queensland.
The NRL’s former chief strategist has urged Peter V’landys and the ARLC to launch a 20th team in Brisbane’s west to tackle the AFL’s $1 billion invasion.
In 2024, the AFL announced it would invest $1 billion over 10 years to double its participation numbers to one million nationwide, with a focus on non-traditional states NSW and Queensland.
Reigning AFL champions the Lions have targeted Brisbane’s western corridor as a key growth area for the game.
Richardson said the Easts and Ipswich consortia had to get together to secure the NRL’s 20th licence and deliver Queensland a fifth team to fend off the AFL.
“The Broncos aren’t servicing the area which is why the Warriors, Souths and everybody else is getting involved. There’s just not enough rugby league,” Richardson said.
“We’re giving up our heartland to the AFL.”

they know that while Rugby League is Strong in the Corridor of Springfied to Ipswich to Toowoomba
With Grassroots and local clubs in the south west corridor of Brisbane, there is no Games or team represented in the NRL
AFL have based themselves in Springfield which represents the Great Population explosion of the west.
it would be like NRL not having PARRAMATTA, CANTERBURY, TIGERS AND PENRITH in the NRL (population 3 million)
they feel if they neglect AFL will eventually move in..
which i think is a high possibility 10 years down the track

You know when they need to use the word “invasion” only shows the Old Temu Pete and the other Temu administration are very nervous of the AFLBeaussie wrote: Wed Apr 08, 2026 7:53 amSeems the NRL is really worried about the AFL in Queensland.

I think it is just the NRL bids way of trying to create some concern to try and get a team to be honest.

Re: NRL EXPANSION
Serious question - do people think this PNG team will create a tourism boon for PNG - will people in large number want to go there given the safety issues ?? Beautiful place and would love to visit someof the islands up that way - but Port Moresby not so keen.

Re: NRL EXPANSION
I have been sceptical about PNG but the recent signing of Luai and the interest of other top line players has changed my mind. They'll get a decent team and the locals will go nuts every game. They'll get massive media coverage. Even overseas media will do stories on PNG and their Rugby League team.Fred wrote: Thu May 21, 2026 3:22 pmSerious question - do people think this PNG team will create a tourism boon for PNG - will people in large number want to go there given the safety issues ?? It will no doubt be great for tourism and general recognition of the country. I now think it will be an unmitigated success albeit with a few missteps along the way.
Re: NRL EXPANSION
Agree with all that although still sceptical re: tourism - be a boost initially - but once hype wears off would be surprised.
Also not as convinced re: success long term either

Wowsers! Is that true makingshitup? I thought PNG was like Paris and New York. I'm shattered pal. My dreams are broken. All this time I thought it was the Times Square or Shibuya Crossing of the Pacific.makingnrlfansgowacko wrote: Sat May 23, 2026 4:20 pmim sure Terry thinks that PNG is like his suburb in Sydney and no idea the PNG is a very less developed country than a Western oneFred wrote: Fri May 22, 2026 7:42 amAgree with all that although still sceptical re: tourism - be a boost initially - but once hype wears off would be surprised.

Re: NRL EXPANSION
i like how alot of people are saying PNG is 3rd world and poor, that is why they will fail...
there are heaps of countries that are on this list... that play sports internationally or domestically...
PNG CHIEFS will be a powerhouse, simply on the fact the Government wants them too be.
