Sydney Olympic Park Sports Centre to host draft
By Luke Holmesby 4:16 PM Fri 21 Oct, 2011

THE SYDNEY Olympic Park Sports Centre will host this year's NAB AFL Draft.

In the first draft meeting held in NSW, the world-class venue will host a meeting of the AFL's 18 clubs, with new franchise Greater Western Sydney holding 11 of the first 14 picks.

This follows last year's draft, which was held on the Gold Coast as the Suns put in place their inaugural playing list.

NSW Minister for Sport and Recreation Graham Annesley said the Sports Centre was an ideal place to host such a prominent event in the AFL calendar.

"Sydney Olympic Park Sports Centre is a focal point for regional, national and international sport in Western Sydney, offering the AFL the perfect venue to hold its draft next month," Mr Annesley said.

More than 400 staff, players and management from the AFL's 18 clubs will converge on the venue along with a media contingent of about 100.

AFL General Manager of National and International Development David Matthews said the venue was the best choice to celebrate the Giants' arrival in the AFL.

"Having the opportunity to host the event in Sydney is the perfect lead-in for the GWS Giants and it is certainly shaping up to be a promising night for the newest AFL club," Matthews said.

Over 1500 viewing seats will be made available to the public, with Fox Sports broadcasting the draft across Australia.

Last year more than 125,000 people tuned in.

Eastern Ranges forward Jonathon Patton is widely tipped to be the first pick, with West Australian midfielder Stephen Coniglio also in contention.

The NAB AFL Draft will also coincide with a number of key meetings to be held in Sydney across the week including the AFL Commission, the National Coaches conference, AFL Football Managers Meeting and the Club CEO's conference.

The draft will return to Gold Coast for the next three seasons.

Just goest to prove to broadcasters there is a lot more content that can be broadcast on tv that rates its tits off for the AFL. It's the reason why the media and broadcasters love the AFL. It's more than just a game... it's people's lives and we all want to know about them hence the huge tv ratings for non game events. Graham knows that too along with the huge economic benefits the AFL will bring to NSW/Western Sydney.

but that figure wouldn't outrate a re run of playschool

On Fox in Summer 125k is very good.

Again goes to show why the AFL is worth so much to broadcasters. Fans right across the country just can't get enough. We will watch anything that is AFL related and the tv networks, sponsors, media, governments of all persuasions and even throwball fans know it.

This is why our code is valued at $1,253 Billion and yours is valued at $500 million. It's all about national appeal that only a truly national competition like the AFL can deliver.

our's was under valued at 500 Mill

& in actual fact it should have been the same as the AFL's 780 Mill at least & time has proved this

in the period of the last deal for the AFL their ratings have plummeted
while the NRL's have grown massively
if broadcasters are prepared to pay a sport going nowhere an increase like they did
what will they pay for the sport that has the track record .. has the big games ... has the veiwers .. & is the only sport increasing its support in All demographics , indeed is a sport going somewhere
broadcasters will be hoping on that bus for sure
so
ours will be valued correctly this time round ... certainly as much as the AFL's .... could even be more
suck it up princess ...

Channel 9's boss has already come out and said that it is unfair to compare NRL to AFL and it wont get a billion doller unless they slow the game down so they can double the amount of ads showing and bring in a new brisbane team asap (something that is not happening in the next tv deal).NRL is in a real bad spot here they wont get anywhere near the AFL.

the idea of manipulating our game clock to extend the length of a broadcast is nothing new & hardly an issue
if broadcasters say thats what we need to do to get a billion plus ... thats what we'll do ,no biggie

& a 2nd Brisbane team & the Perth Reds will enter the NRL in either 2014 or 2015

all sorted
