NRL powerbrokers are reportedly set to scrap plans to expand into Perth as negotiations with the West Australian government coming to a standstill.
That is according to Code Sports, who are reporting the development comes as a fresh blow in the North Sydney Bears’ push for a first grade return.
A Perth Bears franchise was reportedly in line to enter the NRL in 2027, but their expansion bid is reportedly set to fall flat after criticism of WA premier Roger Cook.

Last reliable city by city ratings were 2023. Without Foxtel or Kayo.leeroy*NRL* wrote: Wed Mar 26, 2025 2:37 pm
you do realize. this FRED>>
that Sydney gets AFL ratings of 10k to 15k for AFL matches. (which are in primetime) And have Home Teams in the comp
which most certainly helps
Swans games in Sydney averaged 41,000 in 2023 (-19%), while GWS managed 19,000 per game (-20%). Games involving neither side averaged 15,000.
Perth gets low figures (with no teams in the comp)
Introduce a Team and things change.
SOO ratings in Perth are around 130k on average.
3 game series is 400k

first 11 games of 2023 drew 529,000 for Lions matches in Brisbane. That is more than Lions will get for 11 games on FTA in Brisbane![]()
In Brisbane, the Lions averaged 48,000 in 2023 – +17% YoY – (including a season high of 80,000)

Re: NRL EXPANSION
The AFL are getting a you beaut state of the art world class stadium for nothing in Brisbane - but I guess AFL and Aussie rules has a large following there and get decent crowds and exposure - but see no issue with updating HBF. I’d maybe want to see if the club survives a few years maybe and support/recognition of rl grows to some decent levels if I wax the government but what the hell - why not - other sports can use it. To be honest - not sure why they can’t start out at Optus and see how that goes - but maybe it’s too big and not profitable. I say build them a new stadium - see how it goes.

Re: NRL EXPANSION
really it has nothing to do with the AFL. its mostly due to the olympics that Brisbane is getting a state of the art venue. its only the NRL folk that point this out out of jealousy and fear of those scarey Lions and the AFL. P V Landy is on record crying about it and threatening to take magic round away from the suncorpFred wrote: Tue Apr 15, 2025 3:55 pmThe AFL are getting a you beaut state of the art world class stadium for nothing in Brisbane - but I guess AFL and Aussie rules has a large following there and get decent crowds and exposure - but see no issue with updating HBF. Yes - it’s a big windfall for the AFL all the same. I reckon they’ll play a rl game there at some stage / maybe an origin.

Suncorp corners of the top tier on each four corners have the ability to Seat 2k to 3k seats (that is approx 12k seatsFred wrote: Wed Apr 16, 2025 7:47 ammakingnrlfansgowacko wrote: Tue Apr 15, 2025 8:40 pmreally it has nothing to do with the AFL. its mostly due to the olympics that Brisbane is getting a state of the art venue. its only the NRL folk that point this out out of jealousy and fear of those scarey Lions and the AFL. to the 52.000 capacity.. bringing it to around 62k approx stadium
with little to not much renovations or changing of the stadium, the roof would be slightly changed etc.
i do not see SOO being played on an Oval when the atmosphere and Suncorp generate is insane levels.
and capacity could be identical on a rectangle and crowd nice and close like they are on top of you

Definitely an unexpected wondfall. I’m sure the NRL fans are claiming the AFL conspired with the world Olympic committee to have the stadium to an oval and not rectangularFred wrote: Wed Apr 16, 2025 7:47 ammakingnrlfansgowacko wrote: Tue Apr 15, 2025 8:40 pmreally it has nothing to do with the AFL. its mostly due to the olympics that Brisbane is getting a state of the art venue. its only the NRL folk that point this out out of jealousy and fear of those scarey Lions and the AFL. I’m not sure if the designs have been released but I wouldn’t be surprised if the stadium is build similar to the perth stadium were it can have some form of rectangular configuration
