Hmmm toughy. I'd probably suggest its the Wallabies, however during the soccer world cup I'd have to say noone gives a shit about the wallabies.

So how do you answer it?

I think they are both not so popular in comparison to AFL and NRL

Unless it's a Soccer World Cup, I'd have to say the Wallabies. They are our national team and as shown with the Rugby World Cup when it was here last, can fill stadiums from Townsville to Adelaide and Hobart.

in 2003

these days.... they can't sellout ANZ in Sydney
( so called rugby heartland )
for a bledisloe ... just 70K in 2010

& only 53K V the world champion springboks this year

the socceroos with the right opponent ( England .. Brazil ... Argentina )would sellout any venue in Australia .. including the MCG

I actually don't mind Rugby. The original Rugby and much more exciting to watch than it's poor imitation Rugby League. Not a fan of Soccer however whilst Frank Lowy and co are running the show.

failed pretty hard in Canberra, what was it 50% full in the Malaysia game? The supporters in that town are even more fickle than Sydney.

I am a tragic league fan but will follow both soccer and union when the national team is playing. Rather than localise this issue look at this on a world wide basis. You'd be fooling yourself if you couldnt agree that the Soccer World Cup is the premier football competition on this planet. World Cups in league and rugby are a joke as you only have four or five teams that are competitive. We also know that Australia will make the semis or the grand final on most occassions as they are in the top four teams in the world. However, in soccer they have to earn their spot and if it wasn't for some ballet dancing diver diva of Italian descent we would have been in the semis two world cups back. If Australia play a lowly ranked nation in soccer and dont field their best team then of course people wont go out and watch the game. Have them play a decent side, with a full strength team and you would fill the house. With union unless it is the All Blacks I doubt you would get a full house and even then it would depend on the venue.
