With the New Grand Stand which seems to be going ahead.
does this open the door and cement the AFL's 20th Team

Manuka Oval’s current seated capacity is 13,550. A new eastern stand would increase that to 20,000 for AFL and 18,000 for cricket

I think Canberra is a no brainer - gws can rebrand as a local side by not playing in Canberra anymore - can set up some rivalry with gws - and plenty of support.

Suns are also looking at increasing capacity but think it may be a little premature -

you can't rebrand a turd lollipop ... thats what western Sydneysiders think of the midgets ... this team with all the geared advantages they're given over everyone else has them as one of the best performed teams in the comp since they entered in 2012

but even after heaps of freebies , handouts etc they still only attract crowds of 8K ( heavily fudged .. like they're really 5K) in Sydney & TV ratings that would embarrass the ABC gardening show .. & you want to force more of this down western sydneys throat ?

that end the fact they're still hoovering up the AFL's money like its free ( its getting worse not better ) & the ACT govt gives them 3 million pa to play in Canb will mean they never leave there

team 20
look elsewhere

The Swans aren't the most popular in NSW. The NSW Blues are.way ahead of the Swans, much higher ratings, and far bigger crowd attendances as well as much more media coverage.
Ratings….maybe, they don’t seem to be too happy with it.
Media Coverage….maybe don't get the Sydney papers or TV.
Crowds….absolutely no possible way. The blues attendances are so low they wont even publish most of them, 14,681 at Leichhardt the only one reported. The swans average for this year 38,928 and will only go up. How is that “far bigger crowd attendances.”.
Are you trying to tell me the Swans get more people at games than the NSW Blues in Sydney?

The Swans have never once gotten a larger crowd than the NSW State Of Origin Blues in Sydney.

And sorry to prove you wrong, but the NSW Blues are officially the most attended team in NSW for home games.

Higher ratings, better crowds than all Swans games in Sydney

So time to stop with the fake news about the Swans being the most attended team. It simply is not true and has never been true. Ever!.
I corrected this post on the 14th of June.

So your rep game that is played sometimes twice a year in Sydney gets more attendance that a Swans team game where they play 11 games a year…..wow…if you can only convince those crowds to go to your club games.
There are lies, damn lies and then there are ratings.

Yep, GWS playing in Canberra is detrimental to them, they need to concentrate on the area they say they belong to.

Canberra expansion would be good for the Giants who could then focus properly on Western Sydney.

Manuka Oval would need a decent redevelopment.

Tasmanian team may not be the last as AFL eyes growth in ACT and NT

AFL chairman Richard Goyder says it would be only logical for the league to consider adding another team to the competition after the long-awaited Tasmanian Devils are bedded down, if the code keeps growing as it has in a landmark year for the league’s expansion plans.

Speaking ahead of Saturday’s grand final – the first time since 2006 that two non-Victorian teams have faced off – Mr Goyder said it had been a record-breaking season for membership, television ratings and participation in the home-grown code.

“We’ve had closer games, we’ve had record crowds, we’ve got record membership, one in 20 Australians is a member of an AFL club, television viewership is up double digits in Sydney, and 7¾ million people went through the turnstiles for our home and away games,” Mr Goyder told The Australian Financial Review in an exclusive interview.

In 2028, Tasmania will become the last state to have an AFL team. Victoria has 10 teams while the other four states have two teams each. Canberra and the Northern Territory are yet to be represented, but football fans have long speculated about their inclusion.

“People say there will be an uneven number of teams after Tassie joins … I wouldn’t say its top of the agenda [but] you never say never,” Mr Goyder said, in the AFL’s strongest comments that it would be open to the push.

“If the game continues to develop on the trajectory it has, logically in the future whoever the commission is at the time will probably want to look at it.”

Mr Goyder said the AFL would first press to have more games in Far North Queensland and the Northern Territory while Tasmania is bedded down as the 19th club in 2028.

“We would like to have more footy played in the NT, we play in Darwin and Alice Springs. We would like more footy played in northern Queensland. And with the women’s game, there are a lot more opportunities too.”

the same garbage as before    :(/ :(/
the sad little fumbling game has nowhere viable to go for team 20

Canberra ?
a small market with no industry or corporate support , the Brumbies despite being the most successful super rugby team in the country still went broke because of this & the Raiders almost were 15 years ago as well , before diversifying their operations
Please , Please come to Canberra , If you think the Grants & thuns are money pits .. you aint seen nothing yet

Darwin
a city barely bigger then Wagga ?
    :(/ :(/ :(/
Nah , a more moronic idea one couldn't think of

again
please do it

the sad little sport from the smaller half of the country has ... nowhere to go except maybe a 3rd team in Perth.

nah
Barr has been lamblasted for even suggesting this , let alone it happening. He can't find a penny for a rectangle stadium & will not be allowed to spend any on Manuka either til he does... he may not even last the next election ( praise god that this happens ) & the Libs have openly stated a rectangle stadium in civic is their only focus.
