The Reality of Blacktown Oval

So a number of things have sparked up in the recent establishments of Gold Coast and GWS, and for those who like to engage in Code Wars, heres something of a history going back 20 years or so.

Blacktown Oval

In 2005, the NSW government announced $20 million in funding for the development of Cricket and AFL facilities in Western Sydney. Importantly, the announcement specifically mentions the funding is for AFL/Cricket facilities and $5 million for soccer.

Developing a main oval with seating capacity for 10,000 spectators, including a grandstand;
Developing a second oval for training and junior games;
Constructing an indoor practice hall, possibly with gym, sports injury and education and training facilities; and
Providing additional car parking and an adventure playground.

Andrew Demetriou was quoted by NSW Planning

“AFL/Blacktown Council community partnership, will host the AFL’s multicultural program, school and community activities”

This is crucial to remember later on. At the time approval was granted GWS was not part of the plan.

The Blacktown facility was ready in July 2008. The Daily Telegraph reported that the council had spent 15 of 20 million allocated to sport facilities in the area on one oval. Rugby League people were reported as furious and that league facilities in the region deserved more attention.

“I think it’s disgusting. They’re building up another code while letting down a code that has supported them for years.” – Don Milides, Rooty Hill Dragons secretary

For its part the council responded that the NRL had backed down on its plans to build an academy in Blacktown. Blacktown Mayor Leo Kelly was reported as saying

“I’d say to (NRL chief David) Gallop and all the rugby league maybe get off your hands, come out and talk to us and we’ll move on. Blacktown doesn’t owe the NRL anything, the NRL owes Blacktown.”

In May 2012, The Telegraph and The Age reported on the GWS move to Homebush due to a lack of summer facilities, noting that while the move takes AFL premiership matches from Western Sydney (not something that was ever going to happen anyway), the AFL will continue to play NAB Cup and NEAFL matches there. Some Administration and talent programs will be based at the centre. The move was expected to save $18 million.

Cricket NSW later decided to move its training and admin base to Homebush too, along with the Western Sydney Wanderers.

Again, the Greater Western Sydney Giants were never expected to play premiership matches at Blacktown. A redeveloped Sydney Showground with NSW Government backing was always the plan for the launch of the team from season 2012.


On July 29, 2010 the AFL Commisssion announced that Team GWS was granted a licence to become the 18th team and would enter the competition in 2012. The announcement was made after the formal signing of an agreement with the NSW Government and the Royal Agricultural Society for a $60 million redevelopment of the Sydney Showgrounds - to become the home ground of GWS.



And finally, as has always been the case according to the AFL:

“This is a generational decision and the success of AFL in Greater Western Sydney won’t be known for 25 or 30 years but with a population of two million people, the AFL is serious about this venture and today’s appointment of one of the biggest names in AFL demonstrates our commitment to this region,” then AFL CEO Andrew Demetriou said.

"When the Giants formed in 2009, they were welcomed with $27.5 million worth of purpose-built training and administration facilities at Blacktown International Sportspark.

The project was funded by Blacktown Council under then-mayor Pendleton, in partnership with the AFL and Cricket NSW, with the understanding that Blacktown would become the club’s long-term home."

"“It’s my belief that they betrayed Blacktown ... I don’t believe they have kept their end of the bargain.

“I don’t believe Homebush is western Sydney and the real western Sydney community isn’t going to buy it”

"Yet Cr Pendleton said the impact the Giants have had on the sporting landscape in Blacktown is negligible, reinforced by the fact that not one member of the team lives in the Blacktown region.

In 2009 the club’s foundation players were all settled in Breakfast Point, a picturesque suburb on the Parramatta River, only 14km from the CBD."

they can't afford not to play there

big scrutiny & criticism from people in Canberra if the deal should have been renwed in 2022 for another 10 years purely because the ROI isn't there
the ACT chief minister is a twat tho & signed up anyway ,this will be the last deal, Barr won't be there in 2031 , he may not even be there at the end of this year .

So where should they play in that month they can't around easter if not in Canberra ?

I don't know the answer but I do believe that playing in Canberra hurts GWS in building a brand in their supposed heartland area. and in connecting with the people from there. For the AFL to be spruiking long-term this and long-term that - playing in Canberra seems very short-sighted.
